The Sunday Post [79]

The Sunday Post is a weekly meme hosted by Kimberly at the Caffeinated Reviewer! It's an opportunity to share news, post a recap for the previous week, showcase books, and highlight what's planned for the week ahead.

News:
Monday and Tuesday were PD days, Wednesday and Thursday we had students back in the building, and Friday we got a snow day! I think we got somewhere between 7-8 inches. My neighbor was kind enough to use his snow blower to clear our sidewalk and around my car. I had zero plans of leaving my house for any reason, but I really appreciated the gesture. It will help so, so much when we do need to go somewhere.

I took the kids sledding (there's a really big hill within walking distance) but we only made it about 45 minutes before heading home. It was really, really cold, and the wind was brutal. We built a fire and watched anime on the couch—goals. They were able to enjoy more time out in the snow yesterday, since it was slightly warmer and they were able to stay outside longer.

We took Kerouac and Scout with us and they had a blast hopping around in the snow. Kerouac dropped his ball at one point and it took him awhile to find it again. The snow came up to Scout's chest so she actually had to leap from place to place when we were going through undisturbed areas. It made the trek slightly easier though! I just had to follow the path these two left in their wake. It was up to my knees in a few places and my calves were burning on the walk back since it's all uphill.

We also tried something I first read about in a book! If you’ve read The Finish Line by Kate Stewart, you might remember the scene where Cecelia brings fresh snow inside for her and Tobias. She adds condensed milk to their bowls, and Tobias is skeptical—until he tries it. It’s so good he eats his entire bowl and then tries to steal hers, too. That scene stuck with me as something I wanted to try, and I finally did! The kids absolutely loved it, and I’m already craving more. Note: Best with fresh, fluffy snow.

The snowy backdrop was too good to pass up, so I snapped some photos of my current read (and even painted my nails to match!). I started Good Spirits yesterday and I’m loving it so far. My friends and I decided to do a buddy read since we all have copies. ❤️ Also, I'm obsessed with those sprayed edges!

What I'm Watching:
We’re still working our way through My Hero Academia and Spy x Family, but we’re almost done with both! We’ll need something new to watch soon. It takes us a bit longer to finish shows during the school year since we don’t do screens on weekdays, but we got a few extra episodes in with the snow day.

This first week back at work was rough. It wasn’t that my students were misbehaving or anything—it’s just hard to come back after two weeks off. Everyone was out of routine, and it takes a few days to relearn expectations. I’m also doing a few things differently this time around, and hoping that those changes will be more beneficial for my students in the long run.

Happy reading!

  1. Look at you making the most of a snow day and doing an as-read-in-book snack. I think there's a feature there.

    1. That would be such a fun feature! I've seen a YouTube channel that makes food from anime shows, so it could definitely work. Do you remember when I was Books, Sweets and Other Treats? That was a really long time ago.

  3. Oh nice! Doesn't sound like a bad week! Snow days are truly the best when you don't have to go anywhere! I mean walking to go sledding is totally different, and wonderful! Lol. Glad you enjoyed the snowy adventure!

    1. I'm definitely not ready to go back to work tomorrow! I should probably spend the rest of my evening planning (or at the very least grading papers), but will most likely cuddle up on the couch with my book. ๐Ÿ˜

  4. Good Spirits was cute, but not my favorite. I'm glad you're enjoying it! I agree, the sprayed edges are gorgeous. Graceless Heart is on my TBR!

  6. It sounds like you enjoyed the snow. It's crazy how cold and windy it can get when it snows. I've heard about making snowcones with it but never tried it! Enjoy your current reads, I've seen Good Spirits around and I want to read it.
Going back to work after having time off is hard, have a nice week ahead!

    1. Right?! I was bundled up and still felt the wind through all of my layers. My son's face was so red. Going back to work is hard but I also enjoy the routine. I can start counting down the days until summer break now!

  7. I hope you get adjusted to the routine again and stay warm. Looks like you have some good books.

  11. It seems you all had fun in the snow, and I’m glad it made a tasty dessert for you!
I have a sprayed edges paperback of Good Spirits but it’s different yours - mine has candy canes (you can see them here https://www.bigw.com.au/product/good-spirits-limited-edition-by-b-k-borison/p/6044435?srsltid=AfmBOop9LMBgDBLjKkbAlW3PYd0D4nF9dSjsE7hBa8u1m-nsW6Q3e-Fl)

  13. I'd love a snow day! They're rare here in Texas, so everyone freaks out when they happen. The entire state just stops functioning until it melts lol.

  16. I love the snow, but, here's the thing, I also really don't like it at all! I guess I liked it more when I was little, it was great fun. Adulting with snow is just a real nuisance. Hope you have a good week and ease back into work nicely.

    1. I love fresh snow or when it's actively falling. I think it's beautiful! I also love going out in it on the first day, but then I want it to melt and go away. ๐Ÿ˜… It starts to be a hassle and a huge mess (especially with kids and dogs). I like to enjoy it from inside next to a fire.

  17. Fresh snow and condensed milk sounds kind of yummy. If we ever get any snow this winter I'll have to try it. And what a nice thing for your neighbor to do! Good neighbors are the best. :D

    1. I remember that show! I don't think I ever watched it though. My mom was a big CSI fan, so that's what we usually watched together. Now I don't have time for too much TV. I can squeeze anime in because the episodes are short and less demanding on my time.

  24. It sounds like you have been making the most of the snow! My daughter would love to be able to spend time in the snow whereas I would probably be complaining the entire time about how wet and cold it is. LOL I am more of the stay indoors and enjoy the fire in the fireplace person--and watching anime together would be fun. The snow does look really pretty though.

I will be curious to know what you think of Graceless Heart. I have been thinking about reading that one. I hope you are enjoying your reading!

My daughter wasn't ready to head back to school after break either. I didn't get the break she did, but I had a couple of longer weekends because of where the holidays fell--so it felt like I got a break. It was nice and much needed.

I hope you have a good weekend and week ahead.

    1. I don’t mind snow on the first day, but once I have to dig myself out and drive in it, I’m over it. And when it starts melting and refreezing? I swear the snice (snow ice) is out to get me. Like you, I’d much rather be inside by the fireplace.

I have about 10% left in Graceless Heart, and then I’ll get my review up. It was a lot longer than I was expecting—Kindles can be so deceiving when it comes to book length! ๐Ÿ˜…

I’m glad you were able to get some long weekends over the holidays. That’s what my husband usually does too, but this year he decided to take a bit of extra time off so we had more consecutive days together.
