The Winter King (Weathermages of Mystral, #1) by C.L. Wilson

Synopsis (via Goodreads): After three long years of war, starkly handsome Wynter Atrialan will have his vengeance on Summerlea's king by taking one of the man's beautiful, beloved daughters as his bride. But though peace is finally at hand, Wynter's battle with the Ice Heart, the dread power he embraced to avenge his brother's death, rages on.

Khamsin Coruscate, Princess of Summerlea and summoner of Storms, has spent her life exiled to the shadows of her father's palace. Reviled by her father, marriage to Wintercraig's icy king was supposed to be a terrible punishment, but instead offers Kham her first taste of freedom—and her first taste of overwhelming passion.

As fierce, indomitable Wynter weathers even Khamsin's wildest storms, surprising her with a tenderness she never expected, Kham wants more than Wynter's passion—she yearns for his love. But the power of the Ice Heart is growing, dangerous forces are gathering, and a devastating betrayal puts Khamsin and Wynter to the ultimate test.
"Your father thought he scored a victory over me when he tricked me into marrying you instead of one of your sisters, but he unwittingly gave me the one daughter I wanted most."
It has been a long time since a book has been capable of consuming me so completely. I think my husband thought it was glued to my hands at times, and he wasn't afraid to make little jokes about it. I'm not going to lie... I would disappear on the pretense of housework and he would find me later sitting in the closet, or the bench in our shower, just reading away. We'd laugh, he'd roll his eyes, and I would reluctantly put the book down to continue at a later time (read: stay up way too late once every one else was asleep and then drink entirely too much coffee the next day to make up for it).

I was actually looking for a trashy paranormal romance with a basic story, but what I got was something else entirely. This book has an amazing story with complex characters and the occasional sexy scene (which were wonderful in case you are wondering).

There were a few things about this book that irked me. Khamsin and her sisters are supposed be formidable Seasons, and yet they let their father abuse Khamsin and treat her like garbage. If they are so crazy powerful, why didn't they come together and put a stop to it? I have no doubt that the four of them combined could have easily overpowered their father. It was incredibly frustrating how cruel he could be without consequence.

I also wish that Wynter and Khamsin had connected on an emotional and mental level that was as strong as their physical connection. Honestly, I think they did, but they only ever admitted it to themselves instead of out loud with the other person. I feel like a lot of problems could have been avoided if they had just said what they were thinking.

I would have liked it if the secondary characters had been given a little more of the focus. I found them all to be oh-so-very interesting! Galacia Frey, Krysti, Valik, Bella, Falcon--I feel like they were all developed just enough to feed the overall story, and for the most part we just scratch the surface of who they are as people separate from Wynter and Khamsin. I think there could have been some really interesting information there.

I am so thrilled the second book in the series comes out next month! I know a lot of people have been waiting years, so a month doesn't sound too bad at all. :)

An Introduction of Sorts

I never know what to say when introducing myself...

I had a book blog when I was in college. I met a lot of amazing people, went to more book events than I can count, and treasured every second of it. I don't know when things changed, and when I stopped doing it out of a passion for books, but I stepped away from blogging for a few years. I started a family, moved to a new state, and started loving other things in life more than I could ever put into words. My family is everything to me. I've slowly started having a little more time for reading, but only when it doesn't interfere with my being a mother. My husband is my best friend, the love of my life, and my heart wouldn't be whole without him. I could not ask for a better person to be the father of our children. He's my opposite on most things, but we agree on what's important.

In addition to book reviews, I will likely review comics as well. I'm not sure if I want to review them one at a time, in groupings, or just the first few in a series. It's something I will have to figure out as I go. I'm doing this because it's something I enjoy. I don't want to get so caught up in the politics of book blogging, and the need to do something first or better, that I forget why I'm doing this to begin with. I want this to be something fun for me, and hopefully entertaining for you.

Happy reading!
