I have boxes of unopened comics that are starting to accumulate upstairs, because out of sight really is out of mind. I don't have time to think about all of the comics I haven't read yet, but I did just spend a significant amount of my morning ordering and making posts for all of the comics we've missed since October. That's progress! Hopefully, I'll have time to read them soon. *fingers crossed*

Can't Wait Wednesday is a weekly feature that's hosted by Tressa at Wishful Endings. It highlights the upcoming releases we're really excited about reading! CWW is a spinoff of the feature Waiting on Wednesday (WoW), that was started by Jill at Breaking the Spine.

These Feathered Flames (These Feathered Flames, #1) by Alexandra Overy
Expected publication: April 10th 2021

Synopsis (via Goodreads): Three Dark Crowns meets Wicked Saints in this queer #ownvoices retelling of “The Firebird,” a Russian folktale, by debut author Alexandra Overy.

When twin heirs are born in Tourin, their fates are decided at a young age. While Izaveta remained at court to learn the skills she’d need as the future queen, Asya was taken away to train with her aunt, the mysterious Firebird, who ensured magic remained balanced in the realm.

But before Asya’s training is completed, the ancient power blooms inside her, which can mean only one thing: the queen is dead, and a new ruler must be crowned.

As the princesses come to understand everything their roles entail, they’ll discover who they can trust, who they can love—and who killed their mother.

The Sunday Post [61]

The Sunday Post is a weekly meme hosted by Kimberly at the Caffeinated Reviewer! It's an opportunity to share news, post a recap for the previous week, showcase books, and highlight what's planned for the week ahead.

News:

Halito! Can we just be finished with this terrible, horrible, no good, very bad year? I feel like I'm swimming in quicksand these days, and it hasn't been good for my mental health. I hate letting people down, missing deadlines (like for blog tours, book releases, etc.), and feeling like there's always a reason why I can't do this or that. They feel like empty excuses, and I know that's just me being too hard on myself. Everyone has been incredibly understanding - - especially you, Jaime.

The kids and I have all been out of commission for the last week or so with the flu. Now, the flu is no joke... crazy high fevers, coughing, vomiting, etc. Normally, that's enough to make any parent worry, but now we have to constantly consider Covid. It's fucking terrifying. What's worse? PEOPLE STILL AREN'T TAKING IT SERIOUSLY. How many people have to die before the world realizes it isn't going to magically disappear on its own? My daughter was actually in the hospital for a while, because we couldn't get her fever to come down (before they had definitively ruled out Covid), and she needed fluids.

Trump refusing to concede is stressing me out - - the guy is shifty. We've had people cutting down trees all week, which is loud and disruptive. All of the toilet paper is gone - - poof. My son's teacher has him doing pretty in-depth science experiments at home, which I really don't have time for. It also doesn't seem fair to have them sit in front of a screen all day just to assign more online homework. Like, the kids NEED A BREAK. THEIR PARENTS NEED A BREAK. It's just A LOT. There was already a ton of stuff going on, then everyone got sick, and now I have zero energy and a lot of bad feelings.

Previous week on the blog:

What I'm currently reading:

In a Holidaze by Christina Lauren ๐ŸŽง
Instant Karma by Marissa Meyer ๐ŸŽง
  • Really enjoying both of these audiobooks!

What I plan on reading next:

Love Your Life by Sophie Kinsella ๐ŸŽง

What I'm watching:

The Great British Baking Show is something I look forward to watching every week! I can't believe it's almost over. Black Clover is definitely a new favorite, but I'm completely caught up. There's a new spinoff/sequel for Inuyasha that's called Yashahime: Princess Half-Demon that I've started, but there are only two dubbed episodes so far.

All Our Hidden Gifts by Caroline O'Donoghue
Expected publication: March 30th 2021

Synopsis (via Goodreads): Maeve’s strangely astute tarot readings make her the talk of the school, until a classmate draws a chilling and unfamiliar card—and then disappears.

After Maeve finds a pack of tarot cards while cleaning out a closet during her in-school suspension, she quickly becomes the most sought-after diviner at St. Bernadette’s Catholic school. But when Maeve’s ex–best friend, Lily, draws an unsettling card called The Housekeeper that Maeve has never seen before, the session devolves into a heated argument that ends with Maeve wishing aloud that Lily would disappear. When Lily isn’t at school the next Monday, Maeve learns her ex-friend has vanished without a trace.

Shunned by her classmates and struggling to preserve a fledgling romance with Lily’s gender-fluid sibling, Roe, Maeve must dig deep into her connection with the cards to search for clues the police cannot find—even if they lead to the terrifying Housekeeper herself. Set in an Irish town where the church’s tight hold has loosened and new freedoms are trying to take root, this sharply contemporary story is witty, gripping, and tinged with mysticism.

The Baddest Girl on the Planet by Heather Frese
Expected publication: March 2nd 2020

Synopsis (via Goodreads): WINNER of the LEE SMITH NOVEL PRIZE

Evie Austin, native of Hatteras Island, North Carolina and baddest girl on the planet, has not lived her life in a straight line. There have been several detours―career snafus, bad romantic choices, a loved but unplanned child―not to mention her ill-advised lifelong obsession with boxer Mike Tyson.

Evie is not plucky, but when life’s changes smash over her like the rough surf of the local shoreline, she muddles through―until that moment of loss and longing when muddling will no longer suffice. This is the story of what the baddest girl on the planet must find in herself when a bag of pastries, a new lover, or quick trip to Vegas won’t fix anything, and when something more than casual haplessness is required.

The Baddest Girl on the Planet is inventive, sharp, witty, and poignant. Readers will want to jump in and advise this baddest girl on the planet―or at least just give her a shake or a hug―at every fascinating turn.
