Assistant to the Villain & Apprentice to the Villain
by Hannah Nicole Maehrer — A Dual Review
๐ŸŽง Em Eldridge

Summary for Assistant to the Villain via (Goodreads): Once Upon a Time meets The Office in Hannah Maehrer’s laugh-out-loud viral TikTok series turned novel, about the sunshine assistant to an Evil Villain…and their unexpected romance.

ASSISTANT WANTED: Notorious, high-ranking villain seeks loyal, levelheaded assistant for unspecified office duties, supporting staff for random mayhem and terror, and other Dark Things In General. Discretion a must. Excellent benefits.

With ailing family to support, Evie Sage's employment status isn't just important, it's vital. So when a mishap with Rennedawn’s most infamous Villain results in a job offer―naturally, she says yes. No job is perfect, of course, but even less so when you develop a teeny crush on your terrifying, temperamental, and undeniably hot boss. Don’t find evil so attractive, Evie.

But just when she’s getting used to severed heads suspended from the ceiling and the odd squish of an errant eyeball beneath her heel, Evie suspects this dungeon has a huge rat…and not just the literal kind. Because something rotten is growing in the kingdom of Rennedawn, and someone wants to take the Villain―and his entire nefarious empire―out.

Now Evie must not only resist drooling over her boss but also figure out exactly who is sabotaging his work…and ensure he makes them pay.

After all, a good job is hard to find.

This is a dual review of Assistant to the Villain and Apprentice to the Villain by Hannah Nicole Maehrer. I kept seeing this series pop up around the blogosphere and on Instagram, so I decided to give the audiobooks a try—and I’m so glad I did. Em Eldridge, the narrator, was amazing. I loved her voices for all of the characters and thought she really brought them to life. Her delivery of Evie’s and Tristan’s sarcasm and witty banter was perfection, and I laughed out loud on several occasions.

I will say that I enjoyed the first book more than the second. I can understand—and even appreciate—a good slow-burn romance; however, about halfway through the second book, it started to feel forced and a little unnecessary. The two main characters finally share a kiss, only for one of them to immediately decide to ignore those feelings and push the other away. I hated that their sweet moment was followed by repeated denials of affection and later derailed by a prophecy or some such nonsense. I found myself losing interest in their relationship because of it.

The story also started to feel repetitive and sluggish in the second book. It didn’t progress as much as I would have liked, and I thought the author could have done more with the plot.

That being said, I did enjoy Apprentice to the Villain. The secondary character development is fantastic, and I loved that we get to jump into their POVs in addition to Evie’s and Tristan’s. It’s fun seeing how they think and feel about certain people and situations, and I think the author has truly outdone herself when it comes to creating engaging, likable characters. I definitely plan on continuing the series to see what they get up to in future installments.

Assistant to the Villain (★★★★☆)
Apprentice to the Villain (★★★☆☆)

  1. I overlooked this series initially but I kept seeing highly positive reviews for it, then read a short story by the author and was instantly besotted by their style so I'm definitely going to pick this up at some point now.

Im glad you enjoyed it. Its a shame the second installment wasn't as strong for you but I have to confess that the prophecy mention intrigues me, even if it was an aspect that irritated you ๐Ÿ™ˆ I also love hearing that the secondary POVs are well developed top - always loving having more characters to discover. I hope you love the rest of the series too.

    1. What short story did you read? I'm curious now! I'm still really enjoying this series even though I wanted more from the romance in the second book. I'm hoping they sort their feelings out in book three. I think my expectations were just REALLY high after book one. I'm looking forward to eventually reading your thoughts on this series!

  2. The second didn't wow you as much as the first but it's positive that you still want to continue with the series. Hope No.3 is a winner.

    1. I just really struggle with communication issues in books. This one doesn't fall under the miscommunication trope exactly, but they are keeping things from each other. I'm hoping things are resolved in the next one so I can enjoy it more!

  3. I'm glad you enjoyed these on audio, the first one sounds a little better. Nice covers too.

  4. I haven't read these but I'm always tempted every time I see a review. And so often the first book in the series is the best, so I'm not surprised by your ratings.

    1. I think I expected more from it after loving the first one so much. I also thought they'd danced around their feelings long enough and was happy when they finally kissed. I got annoyed when they backtracked after that. It's still a good series though!

  5. I only read the first one, but my daughter said the same thing about book 2. Though while she was listening to book one, she kept updating me on how far she was through without a kiss. Made me laugh.

    1. I did the same thing with my friend group! I was so frustrated by their close calls and near misses. You could tell they both wanted it—that they loved each other—and then they performed crazy mental gymnastics to avoid actually letting it happen. I wanted to scream at them and shake the book.

  6. I saw these mentioned on another blog a few days ago and they sounded like fun, but I can't listen to audiobooks.
I had to laugh at your reply to the last comment before mine "scream at them and shake the book". I can so relate from reading some books, watching films or TV shows ๐Ÿ˜‚

  7. I loved the first book in this series and enjoyed the second, although not as much for the same reasons you mention. I listened to the second one in audio but had read the first in print. I do look forward to reading the third book. I'll have to decide if I want to read my print copy of check out the audio from the library. I did like the narrator very much!
