The Sunday Post [63]

The Sunday Post is a weekly meme hosted by Kimberly at the Caffeinated Reviewer! It's an opportunity to share news, post a recap for the previous week, showcase books, and highlight what's planned for the week ahead.

News:

Halito! I can't believe I haven't done a Sunday Post all year! My last one was in December. ๐Ÿ˜ฌ A lot has happened in the last four months, so I guess I'll just share the highlights. My kids have started going back to their extracurricular activities (piano, gymnastics, ballet, soccer, Cub Scouts) and my son is back in school. He's really happy to be going in-person, and we've only had to quarantine once this semester (someone he came into contact with tested positive for COVID, but he was fine). They all wear their masks, even though they're usually the only kids wearing them. Most places wouldn't allow parents and siblings inside, so we had to drop them off and wait in the parking lot until they were finished (not ideal but understandable). They've relaxed restrictions for April, so now we can go inside, but everyone is required to wear a mask.

I think Virginia is really taking this seriously, so I'm thankful for that. Unfortunately, not everyone is as COVID-conscious. I've had several altercations at work with people refusing to wear masks. Our store policy is that they are required and we will not let you shop in the store without one on. People immediately scream "medical condition," but we offer online shopping and store pickup, so being in the store isn't necessary. People are still jerks about it though. One guy started yelling and throwing things around the register, which is scary (especially since he also had a gun holstered at his waist).

Speaking of work, I'm currently annoyed with my employers. I went to the doctor roughly two weeks ago because of swollen lymph nodes. My doctor though it was vaccine-related, since they were only swollen on the one side. (Jacob and I are both fully vaccinated now!) Well, a few days later I noticed some spots on my tonsils and my throat felt swollen, so I called to make another appointment with my doctor. She called me the next day and recommended that I go to Urgent Care (the clinic was closed) and not wait until my appointment. She thought I might have Strep, but it ended up being Pharyngitis/Tonsillitis. It's still contagious, just not Strep. I had kept work informed the entire time, and then provided a note from my doctor AND Urgent Care that said I couldn't work for a few days. I tried to get my shifts covered, but no one wants to work more than they have to. My boss emailed me saying I still had to work unless I had a doctor's note (I had given them to the MOD the night before), so I replied with copies of both notes.

This is what I got the next morning:

Seriously? I am sick and contagious. I provided not one, but two doctor's notes. I can barely talk without my throat hurting, and they still want me to come in? What else am I supposed to do? They're not going to guilt or harass me into working, because my health and the safety of myself and others is more important than the part-time job I'm working. I know I am fortunate and can say this, because there are others out there that have to work regardless of whether or not they're sick. This is one of the reasons COVID was able to spread so easily. Employers don't care if you're sick, and they don't take care of sick employees. They just care that they have bodies to work in their stores. We really need to treat people better.

Well, that went on for longer than I'd intended. ๐Ÿ˜… On a happier note, my in-laws drove up in their RV and spent a week with us. We waited until everyone was vaccinated, and it was so nice getting to be around family again. They even helped us work on our house, which is still a work-in-progress. We've gotten a lot done, and I'm almost finished with the big project I've been working on. (Roberta, you asked if it had to do with woodworking months ago, and I said no. ๐Ÿ˜)

My son's Spring Break is this week, so Jacob and I both took off work. We're just going to spend time together as a family, hang around the house, and subsequently work on the house while we have some time. I'm looking forward to reading a lot this week, too. I've been better about making time for books, but it's been a challenge. I hope you guys are doing well and enjoying life!

Previous week on the blog:

Sunday: Nothing.
Monday: Also, nothing.
Tuesday: Again, zilch.
Friday: Hollowpox: The Hunt for Morrigan Crow (Nevermoor, #3) by Jessica Townsend

What I'm currently reading:

Darkdawn (The Nevernight Chronicle, #3) by Jay Kristoff ๐Ÿ“–
Something to Talk About by Meryl Wilsner ๐ŸŽง
The Ex Talk by Rachel Lynn Solomon ๐Ÿ“ฑ

I am REALLY enjoying all of my current reads! I know I'm late to the party with the Nevernight, but I devoured it and Godsgrave within a week. It's such a unique story! However, I'm still reeling from a certain someone's death. There have been so many twists and turns... I'm not sure how Kristoff kept up with all of them while writing this series.

Something to Talk About has been really sweet so far! The Ex Talk has been wonderful, and I cannot wait to see what happens next. Their charade can't last forever, and I'm curious how they're going to handle the fallout.

What I plan on reading next:

To Love and to Loathe (The Regency Vows, #2) by Martha Waters
Astrid Sees All by Natalie Standiford
Almost There and Almost Not by Linda Urban

There are sooo many books coming out on the 6th! I've been struggling to get through them all. ๐Ÿ˜…

What I'm watching:

There are new One Piece episodes! I'm also watching Black Clover, but Jacob read somewhere that it's ending after this season? Have any of you heard about that? (My fellow anime-lovers!) We've also been watching Falcon and Winter Soldier. It's been pretty good so far, although I hate the "new" Captain America. U.S. Agent, right?

  1. COVID is seriously showing me what trash people can be which is a good and unfortunate lesson. Also boo to your employer for trying to guilt you into going to work.

The Ex Talk is one of my fave reads this year!

    1. Right? People are garbage. I also don't work there anymore, so yay! I'm really enjoyed The Ex Talk so far. I had to put it down to get ahead of my upcoming ARC reviews. <3

I hope you're starting to feel better by now! Boy, laryngitis is a nightmare. Which reminds me that this year I've skipped it...but then again, I got pulmonary embolism/thrombosis instead...

It's great that everybody's in your family has gotten the vaccine. We're still stuck with the elders here...

    Haha, I know! You're such a teaser ๐Ÿ˜‚. I'm curious!!!

    1. Since this was over a month ago... yes! I'm feeling much better now, haha. I also don't work there anymore, so. ๐Ÿ™„ They should have treated me better. I know my worth!

And now you know what the project is! The neighborhood seems to really like it. I keep finding new books in there and have to reorganize everything so it fits (people like to just drop and go). The kids love checking to see if there's anything new for them to read since they put a ton of their own books in there.

  3. How wonderful that you are all vaccinated. Sorry your employer was being so unreasonable, but I hope you are feeling better. That's great that your kids are getting a bit more of the norm, and that all is going well.

    1. I'm very thankful we're all vaccinated! I'm curious how the booster shots will work, and if they will contact us when it's time to get one. Have you heard anything? My employer was being ridiculous, which is one of the reasons I don't work there anymore.

  4. Ugh, that is so frustrating about your job! Obviously it's hard for them to be short-staffed, but what if more people got sick?

  5. I'm glad VA is taking things seriously, our state Michigan has as well for the most part although we have plenty of assholes and yahoos as well. It's unbelievable how dumb some of thee people are.

Well, you know how I feel about the work thing so I won't go there again lol. Nice that you got some in- law time!

    US Agent sucks!

    1. Please take all of Virginia's assholes and yahoos! We don't want them. ;) People really do suck, you know? They are just so damn frustrating, and they make me want to scream obscenities at them (which I refrain from doing).

I don't work there anymore! Yay! Moved on to bigger and better things. ;) HATE U.S. Agent, although he did slightly redeem himself at the end. A LITTLE, GREG. Not a lot.

  6. Congrats on being fully vaccinated. My husband and daughter both received their first shot last week. I hope to find an appointment somewhere soon. I hate the way that employers can be. When all of this started my out of touch boss couldn't understand how people could go to work sick (meanwhile I only get 2 sick days per year). He didn't have anything to say when I reminded him that a lot of people cannot pay their rent if they miss a single shift so they go to work regardless of how they feel. It is so frustrating. Any business seems to care only for itself and not their employees. I hope that you have a great week and are feeling better.

    1. Thank you! I'm curious how the boosters will work...? I hope you've been able to get an appointment since you left this comment over a month ago. (I've been very bad about blogging lately!) I don't work there anymore, so thank the stars for that. You only get 2 sick days per year? That's ridiculous. Most illnesses (even a cold) take several days to fully get over. Like you said, people work when they're sick because they can't afford not to. I wish people understood how the world worked, but everything is controlled by people who've always had a lot of money.

  7. Yay for being fully vaccinated. Sorry about your work though. It's ridiculous how places just do not care about their employees - and subsequently their customers because you'd be interacting with them. Ugh, I don't get it.

Yay for loving your current reads. I read Nevernight a couple years ago so I really need to get the next two.

    1. It was such a relief to get that second shot! Thanks. I don't work there anymore, so it's okay. They were being terrible and I deserve better than that. I'm still reading Darkdawn because I had to put it down in order to stay on top of my ARC reviews.

  8. I worked in retail for 25+ years and it is horrible! I was the manager, so if someone couldn't get their shift covered, I had to cover it. I don't miss it at all! I'm sorry people are so horrible about wearing masks, and I can certainly imagine how scary that situation was with the guy throwing things at the register (while armed).
My current company takes COVID very seriously, but my branch shares office space with another company who doesn't comply with the mask mandate, so I hate using our shared spaces.

    1. Retail is the worst. I'm happy your current company is taking COVID seriously - that definitely helps. Don't you hate it when you've been following the rules from the start and there are still people that think those rules don't apply to them? UGH.

  9. I was plagued with tonsillitis when I worked in airport security, screening passengers with tons of questions. I was forever getting throat infections and my employer didn't get how painful it is to talk with it, or how crappy I felt! I got a lot of hassle with it so I have sympathy.

    1. I'm sorry you were hassled about it! Talking when your throat is swollen and irritated… ugh, the worst.
