The Sunday Post [57]

The Sunday Post is a weekly meme hosted by Kimberly at the Caffeinated Reviewer! It's an opportunity to share news, post a recap for the previous week, showcase books, and highlight what's planned for the week ahead.

News:

School starts this week! We had a Drive-Thru Meet & Great, so that was interesting. The teachers were stationed around the school with bags of materials (notebooks, folders with several assignments, etc.), and you drove around until you found the right grade level and teacher. Our son's teacher seems really nice, and she's been quick to respond to my emails about the upcoming school year, but even she doesn't know exactly how this is all going to work. My son has PE twice a week. Yes, you read that correctly! He's going to somehow participate in physical education while at home and in an office-like setting. How? Do I need to make sure he has room to move around? Jump?

They also had a webinar for parents where they introduced the new online platform the school will be using this year (on top of also using Google Meet and Zoom). We were supposed to ask questions during the presentation, and the two non-active speakers would address them while the third person kept talking. IT WAS SO FRUSTRATING. They kept dismissing my questions because a) they didn't know the answer, or b) didn't want to answer me. You can't just dismiss someone's legitimate questions and then only respond to them privately when it's clear they (me) aren't going to stop reposting them. Me asking if the students will have a chance to practice using the website before the first day of school, shouldn't have been a hard question to answer.

I don't even want to talk about the president and the trash that spews from his face. "The most innocent president ever" MY ASS. 🀬 Make sure you're registered to vote and know where you're going on election day!

Previous week on the blog:

What I'm currently reading:

Recommended for You by Laura Silverman πŸ“±
The Barren Grounds (The Misewa Saga, #1) by David A. Robertson πŸ“–
Stay Sexy & Don't Get Murdered by Karen Kilgariff & Georgia Hardstark 🎧
  • The Barren Grounds is SO GOOD! I already know it's going to be a book I read over and over again.
  • I'm not sure how I feel about Stay Sexy & Don't Get Murdered. It's not a long audiobook - - so I feel inclined to finish it - - but I'm not sure I'm the right audience. 😬
  • Every time I pick up Recommended for You, something happens that needs my attention (kids, husband, dog, etc.). Have you read it? If so, what did you think?

What I plan on reading next:

The Roommate by Rosie Danan
Furia by Yamile Saied MΓ©ndez
All This Time by Mikki Daughtry, Rachael Lippincott

What I'm watching:

Instagram is killing me with their Reels! I can watch those for hours and not realize it until it's 3 AM and my phone's dead.

  1. Ugh, this school stuff sounds so frustrating! I hope it works smoothly once your son starts.

    1. The first week went... okay. I'm having to get used to 6 AM mornings again, and the constant logging on and off between classes is incredibly frustrating, but the kid seems to do okay when he's in a virtual class. He follows along, rarely asks for help, and seems to participate when required. There are just too many platforms with different logins, so it's impossible for him to navigate and keep track of it all on his own.

  2. Good luck with school! I am surprised the schools aren't more prepared this go around, since they did have the whole summer to work out the kinks from the end of last year. At least your son has you, right?

    1. I think they tried to overcomplicate things! They're trying to have a full schedule (lessons, recess, lunch, PE, music, etc.), but we have to constantly log on and off between the different classes. There are too many platforms being used, and each one requires a different password. Kid couldn't do it on his own if he wanted to, but he does like being back "in school" with other people.

  3. YES READ THE ROOMMATE. I got an ebook of Stay Sexy but I think the audio would be more fun.

That's fun that the teachers did a drive thru and provided some materials. I think the only people my husband gets to meet are the parents who are picking up technology for the students. We just had the first day of remote learning and it sounded rough. Some of these expectations ore unrealistic. Why don't they just have them log their physical activity and send it in to teachers weekly? There is no need to decide when a child has to run around a room 15 times.

    2. I'M STARTING IT TOMORROW! I got behind when I realized I'd skipped a book in my excitement to get to The Roommate. ;) I typically enjoy romance books on audio more, because it feels more personal.

SCHOOL IS ROUGH. They're trying to use Schoology, Zoom, Google Meet, and something else, which is A LOT. There are too many logins and passwords, and this class is twice a week, while this one is every other Thursday. You can't be this complicated with first graders, especially if you want them to be able to do it mostly on their own. I'm constantly helping him navigate between the various sites and it's exhausting. He does okay once he's "in class," but they only last 30 minutes. PE sucks.

    1. You said this 5 days okay, so I'm going to text you tomorrow to see if you've finished it! I would text you now, but it's after midnight. ;) School is super weird, and overcomplicated in my opinion. Like, get on and have class. Don't require six-year-olds to switch platforms and keep track of 10 different passwords, because that inevitably falls on the parents.

  5. It's Saturday. I'm...late 😳.

The school stuff sounds like a nightmare. At least you don't have to go through it with the twins yet! Maybe, when the time comes, the powers-that-be will have things figured out πŸ™„. I understand that it's all new and hard on everyone, but they had MONTHS to think of what to do and how. And physical ed at home? What if one lives in a very small apartment with very small rooms? Couldn't they figure out something to do outside that involved social distancing?

    1. It's Sunday, so I think I'm later! ;) We made it through the fist week of school, so hopefully this one will be a little smoother. The constant switching between classes and platforms is exhausting. I wish it had been simplified. PE at home is NOT COOL. They had a firefighter on the other day, and he had my son hopping like a bunny to the front door and hiding in closets (what to do during an emergency), but I was having to open baby gates for him, and keep him from waking up his napping sisters. It was also dumb, because the guy KEPT GIVING INSTRUCTIONS EVEN THOUGH THE KIDS WERE ALL OVER THEIR HOUSES LOOKING FOR ROOMS WIHOUT WINDOWS.

  6. Our kids here are doing two days at school with three remote learning days. It's crazy! I am glad I don't have any little ones. Good luck. ☀

Yes, I wish tRump would get Covid-19 and die already. 😠

    1. That sounds bananas! We're 100% online until at least February. We were given two options during the summer: 1) all online and 2) online and then back to school in increments. We choose all online because I didn't want to risk it, but I haven't heard of any confirmed cases at the school yet.

So, you wished for Trump to get Covid... well, he did.
