Reckless Girls by Rachel Hawkins

Synopsis (via Goodreads): From the New York Times bestselling author of The Wife Upstairs comes a deliciously wicked gothic suspense, set on an isolated Pacific island with a dark history, for fans of Lucy Foley and Ruth Ware.

When Lux McAllister and her boyfriend, Nico, are hired to sail two women to a remote island in the South Pacific, it seems like the opportunity of a lifetime. Stuck in a dead-end job in Hawaii, and longing to travel the world after a family tragedy, Lux is eager to climb on board The Susannah and set out on an adventure. She’s also quick to bond with their passengers, college best friends Brittany and Amma. The two women say they want to travel off the beaten path. But like Lux, they may have other reasons to be seeking an escape.

Shimmering on the horizon after days at sea, Meroe Island is every bit the paradise the foursome expects, despite a mysterious history of shipwrecks, cannibalism, and even rumors of murder. But what they don’t expect is to discover another boat already anchored off Meroe’s sandy beaches. The owners of the Azure Sky, Jake and Eliza, are a true golden couple: gorgeous, laidback, and if their sleek catamaran and well-stocked bar are any indication, rich. Now a party of six, the new friends settle in to experience life on an exotic island, and the serenity of being completely off the grid. Lux hasn’t felt like she truly belonged anywhere in years, yet here on Meroe, with these fellow free spirits, she finally has a sense of peace.

But with the arrival of a skeevy stranger sailing alone in pursuit of a darker kind of good time, the balance of the group is disrupted. Soon, cracks begin to emerge: it seems that Brittany and Amma haven’t been completely honest with Lux about their pasts––and perhaps not even with each other. And though Jake and Eliza seem like the perfect pair, the rocky history of their relationship begins to resurface, and their reasons for sailing to Meroe might not be as innocent as they first appeared.

When it becomes clear that the group is even more cut off from civilization than they initially thought, it starts to feel like the island itself is closing in on them. And when one person goes missing, and another turns up dead, Lux begins to wonder if any of them are going to make it off the island alive.

Reckless Girls was an okay read for me. I found the murder mystery aspect a bit confusing at times, though the alternating timelines between past and present — and between different characters — did help me better understand who they were and why they made certain choices. Still, the overall plot felt convoluted and not as well executed as it could have been. Some of the deaths were poorly explained, and the motivations behind them weren’t entirely believable.

I did enjoy the remote island setting and the tension of trying to figure out who was behind the killings, but the characters do very little exploring while they’re there. They make a few trips onto the island, but mostly stay on their boats or in the water. I felt like everyone should have been more suspicious of strangers, but no one seemed to care that they were isolated with people they barely knew.

Unfortunately, the ending left a lot to be desired. It felt like it ended without truly ending, leaving too much up to the reader’s imagination. Lux’s choices also seemed out of character, even considering everything she had been through. After such a promising start, I was expecting more. (★★★☆☆)

  1. Oh bummer! I still need to get caught up on Hawkins' adult mysteries. I read the first one and enjoyed it and have just picked up the rest ever since. Really she toured here a few times, so I naturally just kept picking the books up there! Lol. Sad to hear this one wasn't as good. I'll likely still give it a try at some point! Nice review all the same!

  4. Uh. All very valid complaints - I for one would have wanted more from the setting and more believability from the characters' choices. On the other hand, I don't mind a few loose threads at the end of a story.

  5. I listened to this one a while back and remember thinking it was crazy. Don't remember much else, haha! I think I rated it 3.5 stars so it wasn't a total hit for me either. I think her newer ones are better.

  6. I remember having a pretty middling reaction to this one too. If I recall correctly, all the characters were kind of bad people, and the ending didn't really work for me either.

  7. I can see why this missed the mark for you. Great review!

  8. Im so sorry this one didnt work better for you. Characters behaving out of character is always especially frustrating in a mystery novel I find, especially if its used to explain the culprit. I've loved another book by the author, The Heiress, and think I'll stick to trying The Storm next based on everything I've seen said about it. Although I do think I have this one on my Kindle ๐Ÿค”
