Synopsis (via Goodreads): New York Times bestselling author Kelley Armstrong’s Rockton Novels had one of the most unique towns in crime fiction. Murder at Haven's Rock is a spinoff, a fresh start... with a few new dangers that threaten everything before it even begins.
Haven’s Rock, Yukon. Population: 0
Deep in the Yukon wilderness, a town is being built. A place for people to disappear, a fresh start from a life on the run. Haven’s Rock isn’t the first town of this kind, something detective Casey Duncan and her husband, Sheriff Eric Dalton, know first hand. They met in the original town of Rockton. But greed and deception led the couple to financing a new refuge for those in need. This time around, they get to decide which applicants are approved for residency.
There’s only one rule in Haven’s Rock: stay out of the forest. When two of the town's construction crew members break it and go missing, Casey and Eric are called in ahead of schedule to track them down. When a body is discovered, well hidden with evidence of foul play, Casey and Eric must find out what happened to the dead woman, and locate the still missing man. The woman stumbled upon something she wasn’t supposed to see, and the longer Casey and Eric don’t know what happened, the more danger everyone is in.
I was told by several people to read the Rockton series before starting Murder at Haven's Rock, but I didn't listen. 🫣 Would it have helped me know and understand the characters better? Probably. However, I thoroughly enjoyed the story and never felt lost when references were made to someone's past. Armstrong does a good job of describing who they are to new readers without overexplaining - and potentially annoying - people who have read the other books and have a solid foundation for the characters and how they all know each other. I think you can start with this book and be just fine, but if you want to know how they got where they are, then definitely start with the Rockton books.
Armstrong is easily one of my favorite authors, and I absolutely love how she tells a story. I was kept on my toes the entire time, and I wasn't sure whodunnit until the very end when Casey herself figured it out. I like when I'm kept in the dark with the characters and learn/experience things as they do. It makes it feel more real, and I end up being more invested in the story. Casey's good at solving problems and piecing together information, but she can't predict every scenario or situation.
I loved Casey's relationship with Dalton. It feels like it's hard-won between them both, and I enjoyed their interactions throughout the book. They have each other's backs, but also know when to give the other space to sort out their thoughts or work through a problem. They don't always agree with one another, but they respect each other enough to communicate what they're feeling, be understanding, and not pick unnecessary fights. It's a healthy and wonderful relationship that I felt was portrayed really well.
Murder at Haven's Rock starts off with a bang and never slows down. It's one thing after another while Casey and crew try to solve a kidnapping/disappearance and get their town ready for it's first inhabitants. There are a lot of moving parts, a lot of potential suspects, and a vast wilderness where anything can happen. (★★★★★)
I used to read books out of order, too! I’m glad you were able to get into this one. I would have been so curious to know what all of the references were to previous books. Haha.
ReplyDeleteI'm definitely curious! I'll go back and read the others when I have time. It didn't take away from this story though.
DeleteThis sounds really good. I'm usually a stickler about reading books in order. I'm glad to hear that it worked for you.
ReplyDeleteSame! However, since this is technically the start of a new series, it didn't bother me as much.
DeleteYes! Lovely review. I enjoy this series and I am glad you are as well!
ReplyDeleteThank you! I love Kelley Armstrong and really need to catch up on her other books.
DeleteThe prospect of a healthy relationship at the heart of a book makes me very happy.
ReplyDeleteYes! I think this author does relationships really well. Have you read anything by her?
DeleteI still have the last couple Rockton books before I get to these- I'm so behind! BUT I can't wait to delve back into these! I was so fascinated with all the little mysteries and questions in Rockton and I can't waitt o see where she takes the story.
ReplyDeleteI think I'm going to go the audiobook route with the Rockton series so I can squeeze them in with everything else. Right now I'm just trying to get to Christmas break! I'll have three weeks of (mostly) uninterrupted reading time.
DeleteI'm glad this was such a good read for you.
ReplyDeleteI really love how the author tells a story.
DeleteGreat review!
ReplyDeleteThank you!
DeleteI’m really intrigued by this one! Just to clarify, this is the beginning of a series, but the characters come from a different series? I’m new to Armstrong’s work, so I’d like to make sure I start at the right place.
ReplyDeleteIt's best to start with City of the Lost which is Armstrong's first book about Rockton and the book where Casey Duncan and Eric Dalton, the two main characters, meet.
DeleteWhat she said! If you want to start from the beginning to know where the characters originated, start with the Rockton series before diving into this one. However, you can read them out of order if you want. This book easily stands on its own.
DeleteI read this one before Rockton, ooops. Now I just need book 2
ReplyDeleteSame, girl. Same.
DeleteLove Rockton and this new continuation, so I'm thrilled it was a hit for you without having to read the prior books!
ReplyDeleteI still plan on going back and reading the Rockton series as well! It'll be interesting to see how their relationship progresses knowing what I know now.
DeleteTherese Plummer is one of my favorite narrators. I loved her narration of Katherine Center's book, How to Walk Away. Have a good day!
ReplyDeleteI haven't heard of Katherine Center. What is How to Walk Away about?
DeleteYou're so right about these two characters. They are favorites of mine. I loved Armstrong's Rockton series, but am also really loving the continuation of Casey's and Eric's story in Haven's Rock. In fact, I just finished reading her newest one Cold as Hell. It's also really good. :D
ReplyDeleteGood to know! I love when authors keep beloved characters around but send them on new adventures. It keeps the story fresh and interesting, while also allowing us more time with the characters we love.
DeleteOMG Therese Plummer is an incredible narrator!
ReplyDeleteYes! She's phenomenal.
DeleteI haven't read anything by Armstrong in so long but I've always enjoyed her books.
ReplyDeleteI love her stories! They're so well-written and engaging. She never lets me down!
DeleteI have been meaning to read something by Kelley Armstrong.. this sounds like a great series.
ReplyDeleteYou definitely should! She's fantastic.
DeleteI like how you highlighted Casey and Dalton’s relationship—it’s refreshing to see a healthy, balanced partnership in a thriller. Great review.
ReplyDeleteI agree! We don't often see healthy relationships between partners in books.
DeleteGreat review
ReplyDeleteThanks!
DeleteIt's great when the mystery actually keeps you guessing until it's revealed but then makes sense. I've read some books lately with super obvious mysteries, those are not so fun lol. I'm glad you loved this one even without reading the other series!
ReplyDeleteI get really frustrated when the mystery is too obvious. I don't want to be able to guess who the killer is, or why something happened, within the first few chapters of the book. I prefer to learn new information alongside the characters and see how it unfolds in real time.
DeleteI want to read it :D
ReplyDeleteYou should!
DeleteOh, I like stories like this. I'll surely add this to my every growing pile of TBR.
ReplyDeleteWe'll be buried with our TBR lists. 😅
