The Sunday Post [44]

The Sunday Post is a weekly meme hosted by Kimberly at the Caffeinated Reviewer! It's an opportunity to share news, post a recap for the previous week, showcase books, and highlight what's planned for the week ahead.

News:

My son's "Spring Break" starts tomorrow, which is somewhat ridiculous. His teacher said she didn't want anyone working on lessons, or logging on to Google Classroom to check for updates, but he still has a mountain of work to do before next week starts. It's when they're implementing Phase 3 of their online learning program, so he'll have to sit in front of a computer and "be in school" for a certain amount of time every day. Fingers crossed we can get everything done before then, and also that his online instructions aren't too difficult to manage.

This has basically been our mood the last few days:

My sewing machine finally arrived! They were selling out like crazy, and would disappear from my cart while I was reading reviews. Finally, I bought one without looking it up, so I can only hope it's easy to use. The world is going insane! I'm sure it's because people are trying to make masks (out of kindness or for profit), but there would be, like, seven in stock that would disappear within minutes. I'll be sure to post our crafty creations on Instagram, if you're interested. :)

My MIL sent masks for the family, and I used one when I went grocery shopping. It's such a weird thing, you know? Conversing with people while wearing a mask, or even trying to breathe pushing a heavy cart around. It's not that I couldn't breathe, but that it felt restricted and impersonal. The only way I could tell if someone was smiling at me, was by looking at their eyes. I still can't believe there are people out there not taking this pandemic seriously. I overheard people making fun of those of us wearing masks, or "pretend" coughing on their hands and wiping them all over products. Fools.

My husband got a call this morning that said he might have to go back to work next week, even though there's nothing for them to do. They just don't want to continue paying him if he's at home. How does that help anyone? You're just going to put large groups of people together so they can sit around all day and do nothing? If anything, more people are going to start getting sick. It's irresponsible. People's lives should matter more.

House of Salt and Sorrows by Erin A. Craig
Serpent & Dove (Serpent & Dove, #1) by Shelby Mahurin
  • I'm still enjoying House of Salt and Sorrows, but I didn't finish the audiobook on time, and now I'm back on hold!
  • Jack Kerouac Is Dead to Me has been interesting so far, but I hate everyone except for the main character. Her mom is mentally ill, her dad is absent, her grandmother is in denial, her best best friend is being a bitch, and her boyfriend is pressuring her to have sex before she's ready.
  • I AM LOVING SERPENT & DOVE! OHMYSTARS IT'S SO GOOD.

Seven Endless Forests by April Genevieve Tucholke

What I'm watching:

Jacob has been asking me to watch AP Bio with him, so I'm sure I'll start it at some point this week. Also, After Life. I did watch the first episode of that one, and it seems very sad. Depressing. Two things that I definitely don't need in my life right now! Personally, I've been wanting to re-watch the Lord of the Rings trilogy. We're almost finished with all of the Star Wars movies, so it seems like a good transition. :)

  1. I understand the whole we're-paying-you-not-to-work, but then they have no work. So, they will be paying him not to work, but at least he won't be home? Hmmm. Jack Kerouac was an odd experience for me. I actually read it quite fast. I found myself absorbed in the story, but when I got to the end, I didn't quite understand the author's overall objective. I agree with you, though, full of really unlikable characters, and every time I would start to think the boyfriend was ok, he did/said something stupid.

    1. He's at a research facility at the moment, and there are no funds or people to approve the projects they're supposed to be working on. If he has to go to work, he'll be there and have maybe some paperwork to do, but not really. They've been told the funds would be tied up until after the virus settles down, since they're rerouting the money into making things to help with that (ventilators and such).

Right?? Max will do something to redeem himself, but it doesn't take long for him to do something stupid. I'm surprised by how quickly I've been reading it, too! I bookmarked my page and realized I was already at 28%. I'm sure I'll finish it today.

  2. I have a sewing machine in my closet my Mom bought me years ago...it works, but damn if I can figure it out! Hope your week is amazing!

  3. "I overheard people making fun of those of us wearing masks, or "pretend" coughing on their hands and wiping them all over products. Fools."
This is seriously fucked up. I mean, I only wear a mask when I'm inside, not on the streets - contrary to most people - but it's not like I feel the need to mock those who do. And I go out of my way to keep my distance if we are on the same pavement. Also, the whole fake-coughing etc. thing? I'm sure your kids have far more maturity than those grown-ups! Heck, they should be fined.

I hope your son will adjust to the e-learning situation (and since he's a smart little guy, I'm sure he will). It must be hard for kids that age, having to sit in front a computer and pretend they're at school while they're home, surrounded by their family and their toys and whatever.

    Your husband's situation is surreal...

    1. We don't wear masks when we go on walks in the neighborhood, but we cross the street to avoid coming in contact with other people. I definitely wear one when I go to the grocery store or post office. There's nothing we can do about the ignorant fools that just don't give a shit.

Fingers crossed e-learning is fun and not complicated! ;)

  4. It's insane that people still aren't taking things serious. My family finally has some masks, so we'll try and use those as much as we can. I'm glad you were able to get a sewing machine, and I can't wait to see what you make on IG. I've seen random episodes of AP Bio and enjoyed it!

    1. I posted some pictures late last night! They're not phenomenal creations, but I'm happy with how they turned out! It gave me an opportunity to get familiar with the machine and how it works. :)

  5. I've had to get used to wearing masks since I have to wear them all day at work, but they give me a headache. The N95 ones do at least, the ones I wear if I happen to go to the grocery store are far less constricting. I agree, not being able to see facial expressions is weird, and I don't recognize so many co-workers until they talk now. They don't recognize me either! We're getting used to the new "normal".

I think people are ridiculous! Haven't they seen the infection rate and the number of deaths climbing exponentially? They're probably watching a certain news channel that likes to downplay the danger. I get politics, but a pandemic shouldn't be political. Listen to the science, listen to experts!

It's been about a million years since I've sewn anything, and I don't have a sewing machine, but there are times I wish I did. Hope the one you ordered works out. That's crazy that they kept selling out!

    1. I hate that you have to wear them all time, and that it's likely going to be everyone's new normal for awhile. I disliked being able to see people's facial expressions, and how labored my breathing felt after a few hours. I knew I could breathe, it just felt so constricting having that on my face for so long with no reprieve. I guess we'll need to learn to identify people based on their eyes alone. ;)

The US has surpassed everyone one else in deaths, because not enough people are taking this seriously. It doesn't help that our president wants to life restrictions either. Yes, it may have peaked in some areas, but that doesn't mean it won't happen again. Restarting the economy, large crowds... it's just asking for trouble. Yes! Listen to the experts and the science! They ACTUALLY know what they're talking about.

  6. Love the song! Sums up life beautifully at the moment.

The sewing machine situation is nuts but it's not surprising.
I wonder how many people are going to come out the other side of this pandemic and wonder what they they were thinking with various impulse buys... Home exercise equipment, stockpiled dried goods, toiletries, medicines, arts and craft supplies... Buy and sell pages are going to be busy!

    1. "I've got it too!" Hahaha! We've been watching a lot a movies lately, since the weather has been cold and rainy. We miss our daily walks, but it's a good way to pass the time. We still have to do school work with our son, and we try to play a lot of board games, too.

Right? Did you hear about the guy that tried to return 100+ packages of toilet paper? It was some obscene number... Anyways, the manager just flipped him off and wouldn't take it back?
