My 2019 Challenges!

Hello lovelies! I've seen Kimberly mention an audiobook challenge a few times this year, and it has always piqued my interest. I listen to a lot of audiobooks, so this challenge is perfect for me! I'm shooting for My Precious -- eeep! That's thirty or more books, which I think is doable...

If you would like to sign up for your very own 2019 Audiobook Challenge, please visit the Caffeinated Reviewer or Hot Listens. All of the following information comes from Kimberly at the Caffeinated Reviewer.

Challenge Details:
  • Runs January 1, 2019 – December 31, 2019. You can join at any time.
  • The goal is to find a new love for audios or to outdo yourself by listening to more audios in 2019 than you did in 2018.
  • Books must be in audio format (CD, MP3, etc.)
  • ANY genres count.
  • Re-reads and crossovers from other reading challenges are allowed.
  • You do not have to be a book blogger to participate; you can track your progress on Goodreads, Facebook, LibraryThing, etc.
  • If you’re a blogger grab the button and do a quick post about the challenge to help spread the word. If you’re not a blogger you can help by posting on Facebook or Tweeting about the challenge.
  • Updates plus a giveaway will be posted twice during the year. The first update will be June 30, 2019, and the last update will take place on December 15, 2019.
Achievement Levels:
  • Newbie (I’ll give it a try) 1-5
  • Weekend Warrior (I’m getting the hang of this) 5-10
  • Stenographer (can listen while multitasking) 10-15
  • Socially Awkward (Don’t talk to me) 15-20
  • Binge Listener (Why read when someone can do it for you) 20-30
  • My Precious (I had my earbuds surgically implanted) 30+
  • Marathoner (Look Ma No Hands) 50+
I will also be participating in the 2019 Discussion Challenge hosted by Feed Your Fiction Addiction and It Starts at Midnight (two blogs that I adore)! I only posted a few discussion posts this year, but they were some of my favorites! I loved seeing what everyone had to say, and discussing things as they popped into my head. I'm looking forward to even more interesting conversations this year! I'm shooting for Creative Conversationalist

If this sounds like your cup of tea and you want to sign up, please visit Nicole at Feed Your Fiction Addiction or Shannon at It Starts at Midnight! All of the following information comes from their two blogs, so some of the terminology is off. However, I wanted to copy everything word-for-word, so I didn't leave anything out.

Here’s All You Have to Do:
  • Create a sign-up post announcing your intention to participate and link up below. There’s no need to say what your discussion posts will be about–just tell us you’re joining and let us know your goal. (Can be in an update post or a post with other challenges–you’re not required to make a completely separate sign-up post.)
  • Please link back to both challenge hosts and include the challenge button in your sign-up posts.
  • The challenge runs from January 1st until December 31st, 2019. Sign-ups will remain open through December 31st, 2019. (So, you can sign up all year long! Come join us!)
  • Share it! The more people we get to participate in this, the more awesome discussions we can all be a part of and the more fun it will be! So, invite your friends to join us!
  • Discussions can be about whatever you want as long as it’s relevant to books or book blogging (no discussions about things that are completely off-topic like travel or fashion, etc). They can also be about you personally if it’s a get-to-know-you type post.
  • On the 1st of every month, a link-up will go up on both Feed Your Fiction Addiction and It Starts at Midnight where you’ll leave your links for that month’s discussions. Every month, we’ll update this 2019 Book Blog Challenge Page with the links to that month’s Challenge linky–so you’ll always know where to find the latest link-up!
  • There will also be monthly giveaways, so make sure you check in!
  • Every month, we’ll feature our favorite posts from one challenge participant. There will be extra options in the Rafflecopter for commenting on posts by our featured blogger.
  • Use the hashtag #LetsDiscuss2019 to share your progress and connect with other participants on Twitter.
  • Have questions? Feel free to ask in the comments!
The Levels:
  • 1-10 – Discussion Dabbler
  • 11-20 – Creative Conversationalist
  • 21-30 – Chatty Kathy
  • 31-40 – Terrifically Talkative
  • 41+ – Gift of the Gab
This is one of the challenges I did participate in this year (check out my progress here)! I challenged myself to read 100 books from my backlist, and as of right now I've read 62. I'm actually really happy with my progress, and even found a few new favorites! Despite wanting to kick myself for waiting so long to read them, I know it's okay! Books can still be enjoyable years after their release date.

Even though there's no way I'm going to make my goal this year, I still want to challenge myself to read 100 books in 2019. I can totally do this! At the moment, I'm not participating in the Hogwarts House Mini Challenge (even though that sounds amazing and fun), because I don't think I'll be able to give it the time that is deserves. There's a lot of additional posting that goes along with that, and right now I'm lucky if I can drink my coffee without reheating it six or seven times.

If you would like additional information about this challenge, or you just want to sign up, visit Novel Knight! She's very detailed and thorough with her explanations, which I love! All of the following information is from her blog, but I'm just posting the highlights to give you an idea.

Guidelines:
  • The book must have been published in 2018 or earlier to count. It can be in any format (including an ARC/eARC) as long as the release date is earlier than 2019.
  • You have to start and finish the book in 2019 to count it. Any books started in 2018 and finished in 2019 do not count. Any books started in 2019 and finish in 2020 also do not count.
  • The challenge runs from January 1, 2019 to December 31, 2019 (your local time)
  • Please keep in mind that while this reading challenge has several different community elements to it, reading through your TBR comes down to you! I wish you the best of luck!
How to Join:
  • POST your backlist TBR for the year somewhere online! This can be in the form of a blog post, instagram photo caption, Twitter thread, Goodreads shelf, YouTube video, whatever works for you! You are NOT locked into these books, it’s just something to get you started! Make sure to share a link to this page somewhere in your post so others can find the challenge!
  • SIGN UP using the form below! Sign-ups will stay open all year long so you can join at any time.
  • READ backlist books and knock them off your TBR!
  • SHARE your updates on social media!

Lastly, I will be participating in the Goodreads Challenge again in 2019. I destroyed my goal this year of 250 books, so I was thinking I'd double it and shoot for 500! Why not?

Are you planning on participating in any challenges next year? Do you think they help you achieve your reading goals? Let me know!

    1. This year was my first time participating, and I had a lot of fun! We'll see how next year goes. ;)

  2. I love the Discussion challenge, because it encourages me to do my weekly discussion post. I unofficially always try to to beat the backlist, but I am terrible at it. Good luck with all your reading goals.

    1. Weekly?! I know I've seen them on your blog pretty regularly, but I never noticed it was once a week! That's amazing, Sam! You always think of such creative topics, too. Like today, when you were discussing whether or not to read the last page of a book first. It's not something I would have thought to use as a discussion topic. I can't wait to see what you have planned for next year! <3

  3. Good luck with all these challenges! I love seeing all the discussion posts everyone does for that challenge. And wow, 500 books???

    1. In all fairness, some of them are comic books, which are quicker reads. However, I thought setting my goal at 250 would be high enough to encompass my books and my comics, but I guess I read more comics than I thought (or maybe I read more books this year). :)

  5. Lindsi have fun with both challenges. I do enjoy visiting the discussion posts. It's one challenge that I considered participating, but I think I'm still to hesitant to do it. 500 books in 2019, wow. Thank you for posting about the audiobook challenge, I may signup.

    1. I'm actually going to do four challenges next year! The Audiobook Challenge, the Discussion Post Challenge, the Beat the Backlist Challenge, and the Goodreads Challenge -- phew! <3

You can always sign up for it and be a Discussion Dabbler! It's 1-10 posts all year, so you succeed just by posting a single discussion post. :)

  6. I signed up for the audio book challenge, too but no others. I should do a backlist one, because I've got a lot to get to. Good luck, Lindsi!

    1. My backlist is insane! I try to tackle the books that are on my physical shelves and still need to be read. It helps me choose which books to keep and which to donate, so I'm always making room for more! ;)

  7. Good luck with the challenges! I didn't do any in 2018 and I think I'm going that way in the new year too (no pressure- yay!!) but it's always fun to see what other people are doing! The discussion post challenge and Beat the Backlist both sound great.

    1. No pressure is always a good thing! I don't really stress over these challenges, and just hope my books fall into those categories -- hah! I listen to a lot of audiobooks, try to tackle my physical shelves, and randomly post discussion posts. It's just a friendly challenge for myself, and it's fun to interact with others that are participating! <3

  11. Beat the Backlist is one of mine this year... So many unread books on my kindle! ๐Ÿ˜ฑ

I'm tempted by the Audio challenge... I'd love to love audio books but I've always struggled with them. I have been catching bits of the kid's Rick Riordan audios when he heads to bed and they seem to be read quite well so maybe I'll sign up and give those a listen... I dunno. I guess that's why it's a challenge!

    1. I don't even want to look at my Kindle app! I'm sticking to my physical shelves at the moment, but I'm sure I'll read a few ebooks throughout the year. Audio was tricky for me, too. I used to hate listening to audiobooks, but then I had kids and discovered it was the only way I could read (for awhile anyways). Now I love them! Shane East and Andi Arndt are two of my favorite narrators. Oh! Rebecca Soler! You like The Lunar Chronicles, right? She narrated that series -- fantastic! :)

  15. I love this -- a short selection of challenges, but all ones that will push you. I love it. I am considering joining all three of these! I don't typically do blog challenges... I like reading challenges, but the Discussion challenge sounds great! Good luck, Lindsi!

    1. I'm really terrible at readathons, because something always happens on the days I'm supposed to participate, and I'm unable to give them my full attention. My kids were sick during the HoHoHo Readathon, and I think I managed two books in the two weeks it was going on -- aargh. Challenges are better for me, because they usually span an entire year, and I'm able to do things at my own pace.

I hope you do decide to participate in these! <3

    1. You can always start small and then work your way up! I like to set high goals so I have something to work towards. For example, I wanted to read 100 books this year for the Beat the Backlist Challenge, but I've only read sixty or so. I'll just try for 100 again next year. :)

    2. I've signed up for the backlist/Hogwarts challenge. Forcing myself through the first book. Lol I really want to DNF it but I don't want to let my house down. XD

    3. I've already DNFd two books this year! One I started in December and finally decided to give up on, and the other I started yesterday but couldn't continue. I hope this doesn't set a pattern for the rest of the year! I'm reading The Wicked King now, and I don't want to put it down! Hopefully your next read will be better! I'm sure you won't let your house down. I'm not participating in the Hogwarts Challenge, but I am doing Beat the Backlist -- too much to keep track of, haha.

  19. These are excellent challenges. I am going to take on an informal version of these and set my mind on reading through my backlist TBR and commenting on others' posts. I especially want to comment. I love having people stop by my blog and share their thoughts so much that I want others to experience that joy.

  21. Perfect challenges... not too many but not too few. I can't audiobook so I'm so jealous you can get to 30!! And I love the discussion challenge and want to really participate better this year. I have my own moody reader challenge that is similar but different to beat the backlist so good luck with that one! I read 20+ backlist books last year and it was such an accomplishment! ❤️

    1. I feel like it's the perfect number of challenges! They're already things I do, so I'm just challenging myself to do them more! A lot of my reads this past year were audiobooks! It's been easier to listen to them while I work, because I rarely have time to just sit and read anymore. Congrats on reading so many from your backlist! Hopefully you'll read even more this year. :)

  22. I always try and read a lot of backlist books because I end up buying more books in a year than I can read lol. But this year we're going to try some discussion posts, I adore Nicole over at FYFA and would love to join in her challenge. I've been writing down some ideas and the way the four of us can do a format together, so fingers crossed it works out this year. :) Good luck with your challenges!

I'm really looking forward to their challenge this year (Shannon is also awesome), and hope I read my goal! Sometimes I forget to do discussion posts, unless it's something that I've been thinking about for awhile. I'm looking forward to seeing what you've come up with!
