My Weeky Pull [42] & Can't Wait Wednesday [12]

My Weekly Pull is something I do every Wednesday to show which comics I had pulled for me that week! If you're into comics, or you're looking to start, please join me! If you decide to do your own post, leave a link in the comments. I would love to stop by and check it out!

Venom Annual #1 by Donny Cates, Tigh Walker, Bill Sienkiewicz

Last week I was insanely sick, and this week I feel really blah. Please excuse my delayed post! I'm still recovering and haven't gotten my energy back. I seriously think I could sleep for a week without waking up! It's one thing to be sick, but it's infinitely more difficult when I'm sick and taking care of sick kids. There's no time to rest and recuperate. Personally, I think it's the weather. One day it's hot and in the 90s, and the next it's raining and below 50. I'm hoping it stays cold! I've finally unearthed my hoodies and sweatpants, and I refuse to give them up!

Back to comics... I decided to add Marvel Zombies to my list! It's the perfect time of the year for spooky, and I really liked the synopsis for this one.

"Years after an incurable zombie virus ravaged the world, a small colony of survivors is protected by the Marvel U's few remaining heroes, including Spider-Man, Daredevil and the Falcon. But when their last chance at salvation arrives, will they be willing to sacrifice their own humanity in the process?"

Doesn't that sound awesome? I love the team of survivors, and I want to see how the group has been working together to stay alive. Plus, it has a The Walking Dead vibe that's always appealing. I used to watch the show with my husband, but we stopped around S7, I think. It was right after the incident with Lucile. We just didn't have time after the girls were born. We're slowly getting back into our shows.

As for Runaways, I have questions. I'm not familiar with the group outside of this specific comic, so there are a few references I haven't understood. My confusion could also be from starting this series in the middle and not at the beginning. Not having the specific details doesn't impact my overall understanding of the story, but there are little things that I know I'm missing. For example, someone new (to me) popped up in the last issue, and he's someone they all know, but I've never heard of him. He's clearly familiar with the group, and it's obvious they have history.

It's still a comic I'm enjoying, but one I think I would like more if I had the full story. The last issue was pretty intense, too. There's a lot happening at once, and I'm curious which direction the story will go in now.

Can't Wait Wednesday is a weekly event, hosted by Tressa at Wishful Endings, that highlights upcoming releases that we're anticipating and excited to read. It's a spinoff of the feature Waiting on Wednesday that was hosted by Jill at Breaking the Spine.

Meet Me in Outer Space by Melinda Grace
Expected publication: March 12th 2019
Synopsis (via Goodreads): Edie Kits has a learning disability. Well, not a learning disability exactly, but a disability that impacts her learning. It isn’t visible, it isn’t obvious, and it isn’t something she likes to advertise. In fact, she’s successfully hidden it from nearly everyone in her life, including her college roommate and best friend, Serena.

And for the first half of her freshman year, she has managed without assistance. Edie thought she was in control of her disability, until she meets her match with French 101 and a professor unwilling to hear her out.

Edie finds herself caught between getting the help she needs and convincing her professor that she isn’t looking for an easy out. Luckily for her, Hudson, the badly dressed but undoubtedly adorable TA in her French class, ambles in to help her out…

I think it's great that this story is going to focus on a learning disability!

What are you reading right now? Is it any good?

  1. Meet Me in Outer Space sounds really good! I don't think I've come across any other books that make the learning disability an integral part of the story.

    1. I had the same thought! I know Percy Jackson mentions having trouble with putting letters in the correct order, and being restless in class. However, his problems were the result of him being a demigod. I do like that it was mentioned, but it wasn't something the books focused on.

  2. I really want to do a weekly pull blog post, but I don't really get to read comics. Could I do it for anime or manga?

    1. Of course you can! Do you want me to add something to this post so you can link your URLs every week? I do that with some of my other features, like DNF&Y and Library Love. Just let me know! I'd be happy to add the option. <3

  3. I hadn't heard of Marvel Zombies before! That sounds awesome, I'm going to have to put those on my list too. Hope you feel better! I totally get you on the weather... I also want it to just stay chilly. :)

    1. Right?? I love that Spider-Man and Daredevil are two of the survivors. I really like both characters and can totally see how they would survive a zombie apocalypse. I believe something else mentioned Misty Knight, and she's someone else I really enjoy reading about. I'm curious what other survivors there are...

I'm feeling much better today, just no energy! It's raining and cold, so I'm snuggled up at home. Chilly is the best!

    1. Thank you! Runaways has been so fun to read! I feel like it might be geared for a slightly younger audience, but that's okay. A few of the others I read are pretty dark, so it's nice to have something light and enjoyable to look forward to. :)

Marvel Zombie is going to be pretty great, I think. I know they've tried doing it in the past, but this will be my first experience with it.

    1. I love books with a college setting! Have you read Begin Again by Mona Kasten? It's one of my favorites! :)

  7. Love the Runaways cover, and the Marvel Zombie one is cool too. Who shows up in Runaways? I'm just curious, since I did read the first few volumes (although it's been a while now).

Are you going to go back and read the earlier ones?

I saw daredevil 609 on your list- are they keeping the old numbering then? I hope they do... but I'd be surprised too, since they reboot series a lot and the old numbering would make that hard. Marvel's so hard to keep track of these days lol...

    1. His name was Alex. Molly looked happy to see him, but she was also unaware that he was alive. Everyone else seemed to know he wasn't dead anymore, and they're all extremely angry with him. He sided with his parents or something... still has no remorse about that. I am going to read the earlier issues! It's just a matter of finding them, haha.

A lot of Marvel comics are listing both numbers now. It'll have an issue number (specific series), but also a Legacy number (where it is overall). Jacob said something about Soule no longer writing Daredevil, so this might be his last run. He may have been joking, though. I'm pretty sure my husband will cry if Charles Soule stops writing DD.

    2. Oh Alex *nods* gotcha. He was one of the originals as I recall. Plus I watched the show recently or I might not have remembered lol. As for the originals, they should be in trades, hopefully? Unless you like having the issues better.

I don't know if I've ever read Charles soule, but I've seen his name pop up. Must be doing good stuff on Daredevil huh? Are u guys watching S3 on Netflix this weekend? I watched the first one today.

That's good to know about the numbering. I love all those high Leagcy #'s

    3. I really want to watch the show, but we don't have Hulu! We had both Hulu and Netflix ages ago, but haven't used Hulu since they changed everything a few years ago. Hmm -- I haven't read trades before, but I'm not against them. I think it's a wonderful way to read some of the older stuff without having to search for all of the individual issues. I like singles for my current reads, but may look into trades for past series/arcs I want to read.

Charles Soule is a pretty popular writer! I've read a few of his comics and really enjoyed them. I think he's written Daredevil for the last three years, and he said he plans on leaving him in a pretty dark place when he leaves. He's written some Wolverine, too.

We're going to start trying to squeeze the new season in! I know Jacob is jonesing for it. He re-watched the first two seasons in preparation for it! :) What did you think about the first episode?

Did you hear they canceled S3 of Iron Fist and Luke Cage? There's been some speculation that Disney and Marvel might do something with Heroes for Hire, which would be awesome. I liked how Danny and Luke interacted in Defenders.

    4. I thought the first episode was good. It reestablishes the dark, gritty tone that works so well for this series. Nice to see Karen and Foggy again. I'm less enthused about Kingpin- I feel like we had him in S1, DD beat him, move on. But he reappears constantly in the comics and so is gonna on the show too, I know... plus he's kinda DD's arch-enemy now. It was good though!

I did hear that- Iron Fist didn't surprise me, since it sucked, but Cage did! I thought that show did well! Although... I stalled out on Cage S2, never finished it as I hated the villains and was bored, so maybe... a lot of people did lol? I just really like Mike Colter as Cage. I definitely hope him and Danny get a Heroes for Hire series, or at least guest star in Jessica Jones or something? I liked them in Defenders too...

I'm trying to remember- did you watch Iron Fist S2? Because something happens there (don't want to say- spoilers) that would make a Daughters of the dragon series (Colleen/ Misty) cool too...

Here's a link to the Runaways Vol 1 trade. No I don't work in amazon Sales lol...

    5. It takes place right after the Defenders, yes? Do we see what happens to him after everything collapses around him? I love Karen and Foggy, and I miss their constant presence from the first season. I wish the three of them still worked together, but I can understand how their relationships were starting to feel strained. Kingpin is an obnoxious villain, but like you said, he's a constant in the comics.

Mike Colter is going to be in San Antonio next weekend for the Alamo City Comic
Con! A few people from Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. and Jeff fucking Goldblum! I believe a few people from Guardians of the Galaxy, the cast from The Sandlot (totally random), and a few other people I would love to see. We're 85% sure we're going to go, but we'll see.

We're pausing on Luke Cage to watch the new Daredevil! We've started watching the Luke Cage episodes on the iPad while we play Civilization on the computer. I pay just enough attention to know what's going on, but I'm sure I've missed some details.

We still haven't seen S2 of Iron Fist. It's what we were going to watch after Luke Cage. I have heard of the Daughters of the Dragon, though. It would be fun to see!

They look so different in that trade! I'm really loving the artwork and illustrations for the newest series. Kris Anka is amazing! Thanks for the link! :)

    6. Yes, it starts right off showing how he survived and how he recovers- so yeah it's RIGHT after Defenders.

      Ooh awesome. Enjoy! Goldblum- nice!

Civilization? I haven't played that in ages. I played an older version though, I'm not up on the newest ones? I don't think you're missing much with Cage, sadly- I know Misty gets her bionic arm I guess, but after watching Iron Fist I really didn't think I'd missed anything from Cage that was super important?

Iron Fist S2 is... okay. Mostly for Typhoid Mary as I've raved about before. :) Seriously, she needs to show up in DD or Jessica Jones or somewhere- she was the BOMB. It will be a fricking crime if they don't use her again.

Yeah the old stuff looks funny nowadays lol. And TBH it's not ESSENTIAL, you know? There are so many wiki's now and recap sites that you can get away w/ not reading the old stuff I think.

    7. I love that it immediately follows Defenders! I have so many questions!

We have Civilization V and VI. We play it on and off together when we have time. Diablo is another game we enjoy playing together. I haven't played an RPG in awhile, but was obsessed with them before I had kids. I've been slowly working my way through Bioshock again. Dragan Age was a favorite back in the day.

Misty just got her arm from Danny, and I love that Colleen didn't treat her like an invalid. She made her fight on her own for awhile at the bar, and even in the ring she didn't pity Misty. Colleen is awesome!

I can't wait to see Typhoid Mary! I watched the clip you sent, but still need to watch Iron Fist for the full effect.

It's not essential, so I don't normally worry about it, but I want to read the earlier issues for the ongoing series I'm reading. I feel like a few of those details are pertinent to the overall story. If I really like a comic, I'll try to find the older stuff. Jacobs collects different volumes for Daredevil, Moon Knight, TMNT, and a few others. All of my stuff is newer (for the most part), but I did discover an earlier run of Amazing Spider-Man Renew Your Vows. It was a mini series, so only five issues.

    8. I hope you like the older Runaways stuff! I'm up through Vol 5- I think?- but I never finished either. In fact I should revisit those. There is some really good older Daredevil stuff, for sure. They're in trades too, probably mostly.

I miss Civ! Is it still a "just one more turn" kinda game haha? It was SO addictive, I lost HOURS playing that thing.

      I think you'll like Typhoid Mary. :)

    9. It's totally still a "just one more turn" kind of game! We usually exceed that, because we want to finish conquering someone or trying to get a settler somewhere. It's really addicting, and we tend to stay up way too late.

  8. Ugh, sorry you've been sick! Sometimes the recuperation seems to last twice as long as the illness. So lame.

I'm curious about what Edie is dealing with in your CWW book. And I already want to meet the cute TA. :)

    1. Right? I feel like I was really sick for 3-4 days, but I've been feeling unenergetic and achy for nearly a week. It's a bummer for sure!

Haha -- I want to meet him, too. If he's willing to help her when no one else will, that really says something about his character and personality. I'm hoping it's a sweet romance like in The Kiss Quotient. <3
