My Weekly Pull [43] & Can't Wait Wednesday [13]

My Weekly Pull is something I do every Wednesday to show which comics I had pulled for me that week! If you're into comics, or you're looking to start, please join me! If you decide to do your own post, leave a link in the comments. I would love to stop by and check it out!

Infinity Wars Arachknight #1 (of 2) by Max Bemis, Humberto Ramos, Ale Garza
Moon Knight #200 by Max Bemis, Paul Davidson, Becky Cloonan
Spider-Girls #1 by Jody Houser, Andres Genolet, Yasmine Putri
X-Men Red #9 by Tom Taylor, Roge Antonia, Jenny Frison

Jacob's comics for the week!
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Macro-Series Michelangelo #1 by Ian Flynn, Michael Dialynas, David Peterson
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Urban Legends #6 by Gary Carlson, Frank Fosco, Kevin Eastman
Amazing Spider-Man #8 by Nick Spencer, Humberto Ramos
Black Panther Vs Deadpool #1 by Daniel Kibblesmith, Ricardo Lopez Ortiz, Cully Hamner
Punisher #3 by Matthew Rosenberg, Riccardo Burchielli

We haven't been getting most of the Infinity Wars comics, because there are a lot of side stories and offshoots. However, there are a few that we haven't been able to resist! Arachknight is one of them. It's a combination Spider-Man (Peter Parker) and Moon Knight (Marc Spector). It sounds amazing!

"Chosen as the Avatar of the Spider-Totem, Peter Parker is the dark guardian of destiny doing the bidding of the great weaver of fate... a role that has shattered his mind into multiple personas: a tech genius, a photographer, a teacher..."

The last issue of Moon Knight was trippy. Marc Spector was given a drink that had psychedelic effects. He saw things that weren't there, but that's also pretty normal. The dialogue was weird. The villain (super creeper that needed to die a horrible death) was ranting and raving about the world. His thoughts were all over the place, and I have no idea what he was trying to convey to Marc. I know they were probably trying to set up the 200th issue, but I wish the story had been easier to follow.

Amazing Spider-Man Renew Your Vows has ended, but Annie May Parker is making an appearance in Spider-Girls. I've enjoyed Jody Houser's writing, and I'm excited to see what she does with this mini series.

X-Med Red is always a delight! I love how relevant it is to the world today.

Can't Wait Wednesday is a weekly event, hosted by Tressa at Wishful Endings, that highlights upcoming releases that we're anticipating and excited to read. It's a spinoff of the feature Waiting on Wednesday that was hosted by Jill at Breaking the Spine.

Girls on the Verge by Sharon Biggs Waller
Expected publication: April 9th 2019
Synopsis (via Goodreads): A powerful, timely coming-of-age story about a young woman from Texas who goes on a road trip with two friends to get an abortion, from award-winning author Sharon Biggs Waller.

Camille couldn't be having a better summer. But on the very night she learns she got into a prestigious theater program, she also finds out she’s pregnant. She definitely can’t tell her parents. And her best friend, Bea, doesn’t agree with the decision Camille has made.

Camille is forced to try to solve her problem alone . . . and the system is very much working against her. At her most vulnerable, Camille reaches out to Annabelle Ponsonby, a girl she only barely knows from the theater. Happily, Annabelle agrees to drive her wherever she needs to go. And in a last-minute change of heart, Bea decides to come with.

Girls on the Verge is an incredibly timely novel about a woman’s right to choose. Sharon Biggs Waller brings to life a narrative that has to continue to fight for its right to be told, and honored.

I have a feeling Girls on the Verge is going to be really emotional. It's definitely one I will have to be in the right mental state for. Do you like reading books that challenge your way of thinking, or cause you to view something a little bit differently? I really enjoy books that take me out of comfort zone and offer a different perspective.

  1. What a tricky topic to tackle. It’ll be interesting to see how it’s handled. I sometimes enjoy books that take on touchy subjects. It can challenge my viewers, confirm them, or just give me something to think about.

    1. I love books that push my boundaries and make me think! I always learn something, whether I agree with it or not, and I think it's important to be open-minded. I can have strong feelings about something and still be open to other perspectives. I'm curious to see how the author chooses to handle this topic.

  2. Girls on the Verge does sound really timely. I mostly just read for escapism, but sometimes it's important to read something that will make you think!

    1. I love getting lost in fantasy, but I also love books that challenge my way of thinking. I prefer the unrealistic, because the world is a scary place right now, but that's also why realistic books are important. I try to balance the two!

  3. I will be curious to see the reviews of Girls on the Verge. Great find!

    1. Same! I want to know what people think about it before I jump into it myself. Normally, I don't like to read too many reviews before I start a book, but sometimes it's a good idea to know what you're getting into. Thanks, Kimberly!

    1. Nice! I can't wait to read your review for this one! I don't have it yet. It's just a book I stumbled across and really want to read in the future. April is still a few months away!

  5. Spider Girls?! When did this happen?!?!

    1. Today! Spider-Girls sort of continues Annie's story from Amazing Spider-Man Renew Your Vows, but not really. It's an entirely new story with three different Spider-Girls!

  6. I haven't heard of Girls on the Verge, but it does sounds really interesting. Like you, I have to be in the mood to read emotional books. I'll be looking forward to see what you thought of it.

    1. Oh! I haven't read it yet! It's a book I'm waiting on. Can't Wait Wednesday is a way to highlight books that haven't been released yet, but ones that we're waiting to read! I don't have a copy, and it's not being released until next year, so I'll have to wait awhile.

  7. That's a killer Moon Knight cover, with the gargoyle and everything. Frickin awesome. Sorry to hear the prior issue was weird, though? I haven't picked up any of the Moon Knight stuff, yet...

I wouldn't even know where to start with Infinity Wars lol. Is this like shadowing the movie events or is it like Infinity Gauntlet from the comics over again?

    1. I can always count on the Moon Knight covers to be unique! I love the gargoyle and the coloring. Did you watch the Gargolyes TV show growing up? That makes me feel old! I actually think the 200th issue is the last one... It's supposed to conclude this arc, and I haven't heard anything about them starting a new one, or getting a different writer. I'm curious if this is the end for awhile, or just the end for right now.

Oh, these Infinity Wars offshoots... it's really confusing. Requiem (I can tell you who that is later if you want me to, but I didn't want to spoil it just in case!) essentially folds the universe in half. They're trying to save the day, but you know how that goes -- hah! When the universe is folded in half, everything gets really messed up.

      Some of the mashups:
Moon Knight and Spider-Man = Arachknight
Scarlet Witch and X-23 = Weapon Hex
Captain America and Doctor Strange = Soldier Supreme
Iron Man and Thor = Iron Hammer

That's just a few! I haven't read any of the others, though I'm curious about the Scarlet Witch and X-23 combo. They've been really creative with their ideas!

    2. The characters don't know the world has been folded in half either, so everyone gets a new origin story. Well, the combinations of people get new origin stories. I think it's something you might want to check out!

    3. I never did see Gargoyles! I seem to have missed out on some of the best shows. And it's so weird thinking of Moon Knight having a 200th issue... wow. I hope they keep on with it, in some form.

Oh wow that is out there! I had no idea. Definitely different than the movie then! I'm glad they are doing a good job with it, sounds like...

    4. Okay... so now you need to read something by Julie Kagawa, AND you need to watch Gargoyles. I'm pretty sure the first few episodes are on YouTube. Jacob and I went through all the old TMNT a few years ago. I also watched an episode of Gummy Bears (bouncing here and there and everywhere), if you're familiar with that! I was trying to compare the TV shows I grew up with to the ones out there today (cartoons mostly).

    5. I honestly don't know about Infinity Wars! I haven't been reading the newer stuff. Jacob is, so I can always ask him, but he seems to be enjoying it! He had to explain the world-bending to me when I asked why everyone was being smooshed together.

    6. "smooshed together" haha yeah that would throw me too- I saw stuff like Arachknight or whatever and didn't put it together at first, that they were melding a bunch of the heroes together. And speaking of cartoons I never saw, I just read scooby Apocalypse Vol. 1 (collected edition) and it was pretty good. It's not like the old scooby Doo stuff, it's been re- imagined, but it's still familiar and it was good!

      Delete
    7. Oh just to say too- I read the first 4 issues of X-Men Red last night. The first three were free to borrow on ComiXology Unlimited and I bought the fourth. I'm not super crazy about the art but I really liked the writng- Tom Taylor seems to have a good feel for the characters.

      Delete
    8. Collected edition? Nice! I didn't know there were Scooby Doo comics! I loved watching the cartoons when I was a kid. Do they even make Scooby Doo stuff anymore? I'm glad you enjoyed it!

Yay! I'm so happy you enjoyed the story. I'm really loving Tom Taylor's writing! I also can't wait to see how he's going to conclude this arc. There's a ton of stuff going on!

      Delete
    9. Yes Scooby Apocalypse they're like on issue 20- something I think, and there are 3 or 4 collected editions already. I liked the first one a lot, I'm gonna stick with em for a while.

Yeah I'm intrigued because I read part of grant Morrison's run back in the day when he intro'd Cassndra Nova but I never finished, so I don't know much about her- but seeing her as the villain here was interesting. I have no idea who Honey Badger is but I think she's the snarly one? I love all her comments! And telling Namor to put on some clothes- that made me laugh. :)

  8. Awesome haul - the comics! I don't know anyone who's as quite dedicated as you. ^.^ I hope you'll have a blast reading them.

    1. Hah! I don't think I read that many on my own, but Jacob and I do have a lot combined. He reads a few of mine, and I plan to eventually read so me of his. There's just not enough time! <3

    1. I have to be in the right headspace for it, because there's no way it's going to be an easy read. I don't want to read something heavy and emotional when I'm already feeling down or having a bad day, so I have to prepare myself for the challenging topics.

  14. I love that graphic for Moon Knight. And totally agree about Girls on the Verge - sounds great, but will definitely prepare.

    1. Moon Knight tends to be a little darker, but it matches the story! This should actually be the last issues, I think. I haven't seen anything about continuing the series after #200.

    1. I've read a few books that included teen pregnancies, but the topic of abortion rarely comes up. I think it's an issue the world is currently dealing with, and I'm curious how the author will tackle such a sensitive subject.
