The Sunday Post [64]

The Sunday Post is a weekly meme hosted by Kimberly at the Caffeinated Reviewer! It's an opportunity to share news, post a recap for the previous week, showcase books, and highlight what's planned for the week ahead.

News:

Hello, lovelies! I  am enjoying this wonderful warm weather we've been having. It's not summer hot yet, so we haven't gone to the beach, but it's been stay-outside-all-day kind of weather. We've been going on walks, riding our bicycles, visiting the various playgrounds in our area, and generally enjoying not being stuck inside all of the time. The kids were hesitant about not wearing their masks outside, but we've relaxed our rules a little based on the information from the CDC. It's been so great seeing them play with other kids and have normal childhood experiences. Although, it does mean they are exposed to more germs and likely the reason we all had a cold last week.

I had an amazing Mother's Day with my monsters! Breakfast in bed followed by a day of used bookstores, Ethiopian food, and ice cream. All of it was wonderful.

Soccer season has come to an end, so we're enjoying a brief reprieve from some of their extracurricular activities. It's been nice not having to be somewhere every single day. My son's almost done with school, but we're thinking about doing a summer session to help him catch up on what he missed while everyone was virtual this year. He has been doing so much better with in-person instruction, and he comes home so happy each day. I'm sure being able to socialize with kids his own age has really helped, too. We did our best with virtual learning, but there are just some experiences you can't replicate at home.

My last Sunday Post I mentioned my job and how terrible they were being, so I'm happy to report that I no longer work there. They've actually had a pretty high turnover rate since I left, and blame me for "starting something," when I put my two week's notice in. It's not true, obviously. I had no idea 5 other people would quit after I did. Maybe treat your employees better? Pay them more? I doubt that will happen, but the minimum wage is being increased in Virginia. It's still not what people deserve to be paid, but it's better than nothing.

I've started buying multiple copies of my favorite books, because people don't return them. ThriftBooks has been a lifesaver in that regard. I want to share my love of reading, and I'm happy to loan out books from my collection, but you have to give them back. I expect you to fall in love with them - that's why I let you borrow them in the first place - but you can't keep them just because you loved them. BUY YOUR OWN AND GIVE  MINE BACK.

Previous week on the blog:

Sunday: Nothing to see here...

Monday: Nothing on this day either...

Tuesday: Mary Jane by Jessica Anya Blau - Review

Wednesday: My Weekly Pull [167] & Can't-Wait Wednesday [142] - Post

Thursday: Nada...

Friday: Past Due Reviews [8] - Post

Saturday: Mary Jane by Jessica Anya Blau [Sticky Notes Edition + Giveaway] - Post

What I'm currently reading:

The Accidental Apprentice (Wilderlore, #1) by Amanda Foody ๐Ÿ“ฑ
Astrid Sees All by Natalie Standiford ๐Ÿ“–
Spells Trouble (Sisters of Salem, #1) by P.C. & Kristin Cast ๐ŸŽง

I started Accidental Apprentice with my son last night. We're both enjoying it so far, especially since they just mentioned a dragon. The boy loves dragons, haha. Astrid Sees All is one I've been reading for a few days, but I'm having trouble losing myself in the story. I love the setting, but the characters are meh. I'm not giving up on it yet, so hopefully it gets better soon. Spells Trouble is my current audiobook (received a physical ARC from the publisher and an audio ARC from NetGalley). Unfortunately, the narrator really isn't working for me, so I'm thinking about switching to my physical copy.

What I plan on reading next:

The Soulmate Equation by Christina Lauren
The Summer Job by Lizzy Dent

What I'm watching:

We just finished Falcon and Winter Soldier, so we're all caught up on our MCU stuff. I'm still watching One Piece and Black Clover, and I think I'll start season four of Attack on Titan soon (always creeps me out, but sooo good).

  1. Look at you. You're a revolutionary starting a revolt at your old job. HA! I am glad you were in a position to be able to leave a place where they were not treating your right. I hope you can find something better quickly. It's interesting for me to hear how the kids are doing with all this. I am awful, but so grateful that my kid was not school aged during this mess. I always ask my sister how things are going at school, and I am happy to hear your son is doing better now that he is getting in-person instruction.

    1. It was not my intention to start a revolt or be revolutionary. People asked me why I was leaving, so I told them. LOL. I'm glad I was able to leave, too. I know a lot of people are stuck in their toxic jobs, which is no way to live life.

  2. I'm happy you were able to leave a toxic work environment and your mother's day sounds wonderful! We got pho and it was my first time inside a restaurant.

    1. The restaurant we went to still wasn't open for dining, so we got it to go and had a picnic at a playground. The children were very happy about it. ;) I hope your Mother's Day was awesome, too! <3

  5. Dude, how are youuu? I saw your comment on my blog. :) And yay for used bookstores! Sounds like an awesome day. Also- congrats on starting some thing lol. I have no sympathy for companies that don't pay people or treat them like human beings.

I used to buy multiple copies of favorite books- they were "reading copies" haha. Mostly older SF books, so I know not the same, but yes PEOPLE AREN'T RETURNING BOOKS? Gah!

Wilderlore looks fun! And I love that cover for Summer Job.

    1. I'm good! It's been a minute, haha. Right? Used bookstores are the way to my heart. <3 I really didn't mean to start anything, but I'm not mad that I did. Maybe they'll realize something is wrong and attempt to fix it. I doubt it, but maybe.

TWO PEOPLE HAVE YET TO RETURN BORROWED BOOKS DESPITE ASSURANCES THEY WOULD.

We're really enjoying Wilderlore! It's the MG I've been needing in my life. :)

    2. I can't imagine people not returning books! Actually... yes I can, now that I think of it. We need tohave Repo people for books :)

      Used bookshops are the best!!

    3. YES. Let's make an app that tracks borrowed books, or that fines you for not returning them! Oh, wait... that would be A LIBRARY, which I am NOT. ๐Ÿคฃ

    4. How about a horror story where there's a creepy Repo man (or woman) who repo's books that assholes don't return? :)):))

  6. Yay for getting away from a bad work environment. You would definitely think they'd take a hint if that many people quit right behind you. Your Mother's Day sounds perfect. :)

    1. I hope so! They were trying to open another store, so they're probably more annoyed than anything else. My Mother's Day was wonderful! <3

  7. I love it when weather is warm enough to make you want to be outside all the time! It's so good for the kids! Glad to hear you got out of a toxic work environment. The Soulmate Equation was sooo good! Hope you love it, too! :)

    1. Right? We're starting to go out earlier now that the days are getting hotter. Going outside when it's in the 70's is way better than going out when it's anything over 80! ;)

Thanks. I'm happy I no longer work there. Good to know! I hope I can start it this weekend.

    1. I'm enjoying my new job much more! I've kept in touch with someone from my old job, and she says they have her working overtime to compensate for their employee shortage.

  9. Hope you enjoy Soulmate Equation. It was just a classic romcom, not one of those bait and switch books with a romance cover and a depressing storyline!

    1. Lol! I feel like that happens a lot these days! I go into a book thinking I'm going to get a sweet romance, and then end up with something else entirely. ;)

  10. So all's going well, apparently? Except for the job thing, which sucks. My heart goes out to all the people who can't afford to leave a toxic workplace. I hope you'll find a better job soon!

    1. All is well! I already have a new job that I (mostly) like. The hours are a little longer and I'm on my feet more, but I'm also not confined to a register or cleaning up after other people's animals. ๐Ÿ™„

  11. I didn't know you left your job (or what happened - I have to go back and read your posts lol) This pandemic has really highlighted these bosses/managers treatment hasn't it?

I think I'm going to buy the new CLo. I hear it's good.

  12. I am so glad that you and your kids are enjoying time outside. It is good to see kids being kids. I really worried about how virtual school would compare for a lot of kids and I have a feeling a lot of kids will need to catch up on a few things. I hope you have a great week. Happy reading!

    1. Right? It makes me so happy to see them outside playing with other kids their age. I love doing things with them, but they also need to socialize with someone other than me. ;) If we're the only ones at the playground, I'll play games with them. If there are other kids there, I'll read while they play. It works out. <3

  13. It's just been hot here but my grandson likes going with me when I take Falcor for a walk. My daughter's work has a high turnover rate too. I'm glad you got out of there if you didn't like it though.

    1. My kiddos love walking the dogs! I don't let them hold the dog's leashes yet (we have big doggos), but they do get to choose where we walk (makes them feel important, haha).

I really wish paying people a decent minimum wage wasn't so controversial. I get that businesses want to make as much money as possible, but people have families. They need to be able to pay their bills and buy groceries. They shouldn't have to live paycheck to paycheck.

  14. It must be nice to get back to normalcy! We aren't even close to that where I live. I also have a pet peeve about people not returning books! Those are my babies and I have a hard time when they don't return. I hope that you enjoy the books on your list this week. :)

    1. Yes, it has been! I love seeing my kids being kids again. I loved all of the extra family time we've had together over the last year, but I also know that they need to socialize with kids their own age. :)

  15. I'm glad you're no longer at that job, and that's kind of great others followed your lead. I know that's not what you intended, but it's obviously something a lot of other people wanted to do as well so maybe they just needed to see someone else leave first.

Happy belated Mother's Day! It sounds like you had a great day.

    1. I still can't believe 5 other people quit. ๐Ÿ˜… Apparently, they're having a hard time hiring new people, too. One of them was gross and kept hitting on the female employees so they fired him, and another one lied about their age (said they were 16 when they were 15) so they let that person go, too. I still talk to someone that works there, and she said she's being overworked to compensate for the store not having enough people.

My Mother's Day was wonderful! Thank you! <3

  17. I envy you summer weather! We've been having constant rain, storms and high winds... Someone forgot to tell the weather man it's MAY!

I often forget that the UK is weird and celebrates Mother's Day months before the rest of the world seems to... It was mid-March this year. I'm glad you had a lovely day!

Also, I'm glad you were able to switch jobs! I read your posts on Twitter from when you were ill and they were being assholes and trying to make you come in despite numerous doctors notes. Unbelievably poor behaviour from an employer. :(

    1. I think I jinxed myself because we've had rain the last few days, haha. It's off an on so it's not too bad, but we've been hanging out inside regardless. The kiddos did go play in the rain yesterday, but only for about half an hour. They had to come in once there was thunder.

I always forget that Mother's Day isn't on the same day everywhere!
