My Weekly Pull [67] & Can't Wait Wednesday [37]

My Weekly Pull is something I do every Wednesday (yep, it's Thursday) to show which comics I had pulled for me that week! If you're into comics, or you're looking to start, please join me! If you decide to do your own post, there's a link-up at the bottom. I would love to stop by and check it out!

Firefly #5 by Greg Pak, Dan McDaid, Lee Garbett
Runaways #20 by Rainbow Rowell, Kris Anka

Jacob's comics for the week!
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles #93 by Tom Waltz, Dave Wachter, Kevin Eastman
Amazing Spider-Man #20 by Nick Spencer, Humberto Ramos
Hulkverines #3 (of 3) by Greg Pak, Ario Anindito, Gerardo Zaffino
Venom #13 by Cullen Bunn, Iban Coello, Ryan Stegman

I am really loving Firefly! Greg Pak has exceeded my expectations, and really captured the characters from the television show. It feels like the show never ended, and they're just going on another adventure. I cannot wait to see where the story goes from here! There are endless possibilities.

I think this will be my last issue of Runaways. It's been my light and fun comic for awhile now, but I've started to lose interest in the story. The characters feel exactly the same, even after life-changing experiences, and I wish there had been more growth after twenty issues. New people are introduced, but the group is very dependent on each other. They've also remained in essentially the same place throughout the comic, and danger finds them instead of the other way around. It's sad to say, but I'm just not feeling this one anymore.

Can't Wait Wednesday is a weekly event, hosted by Tressa at Wishful Endings, that highlights upcoming releases that we're anticipating and excited to read. It's a spinoff of the feature Waiting on Wednesday that was hosted by Jill at Breaking the Spine.

Call It What You Want by Brigid Kemmerer
Expected publication: June 25th 2019
Synopsis (via Goodreads): When his dad is caught embezzling funds from half the town, Rob goes from popular lacrosse player to social pariah. Even worse, his father’s failed suicide attempt leaves Rob and his mother responsible for his care.

Everyone thinks of Maegan as a typical overachiever, but she has a secret of her own after the pressure got to her last year. And when her sister comes home from college pregnant, keeping it from her parents might be more than she can handle.

When Rob and Maegan are paired together for a calculus project, they’re both reluctant to let anyone through the walls they’ve built. But when Maegan learns of Rob’s plan to fix the damage caused by his father, it could ruin more than their fragile new friendship...

This captivating, heartfelt novel asks the question: Is it okay to do something wrong for the right reasons?

Kemmerer is a new favorite, and I've been trying to read everything she's written! They've all been great so far! Have you read A Curse So Dark and Lonely? Amazing! I have Letters to the Lost, but haven't started it yet. Call It What You Want sounds like it'll be another awesome read.

  1. I really liked that tv show Firefly. With all the remakes that Hollywood keeps making you would think this would be right up there to remake.

    1. If they did a remake, I would want them to use the original characters! I believe that's what Veronica Mars is doing. Shows like Charmed are coming back, but with new people and a different story. I would want a continuation. :)

  2. I’m definitely excited for Call It What You Want. I loved both Letters to the Lost and More Than We Can Tell so I’m thrilled to see another contemporary from Kemmerer.

    1. I know you don't like fantasy, but A Curse So Dark and Lonely was GREAT! It doesn't read like a fantasy, but more like they're in the past. People use swords, and there's one person that can use magic, but they're not around often. Someone had to create the curse! Everything else feels normal and realistic. You might like it! Oh, yes, the "beast" part is very fantastical, but it's also a non-issue for the most part. ;)

  3. I have really enjoyed all of Kemmerer's contemporaries and am excited about this one as well. I had read one of her paranormals and it was ok, but I am more of a contemporary reader and happy to see she is releasing another.

    1. A Curse So Dark and Lonely was my first book by the author, and I devoured it! Was that the one you read? It's marked as a fantasy, but it really reads like a contemporary. There's the curse and his potential to be a beast, but that's about it. I have Letters to the Lost that I'm really looking forward to! :)

    1. Of all the comics I'm reading right now, Firefly might be my favorite! The artwork is amazing, and the story is perfect. Pak has really brought these characters to life, which isn't something I thought I would ever see again. I'm assuming you've seen the show? Ugh, I hate that it was cancelled. I also don't know if I'd want a remake, since I'm partial to the original cast. Maybe if they did what Verica Mars is doing...;)

  7. I have not watched Firefly yet even though everyone who knows me tells me I will love it. I need to look and see if the library has the DVDs. ๐Ÿš€

    1. Do you have Hulu? I'm pretty sure it's on there! I do have to warn you... they cancelled the show after one season, and you're definitely going to want more. It was a cruel cancellation, because the show is AWESOME. It's one of the reasons I'm so happy about the comic! :)

    2. I think so? Haha! I'll have to check. It would have been years ago.

  9. Ooh Brigid Kemmerer has a new one coming out! I'm pants when it comes to keeping up with books being released, thank goodness for bloggers. Her books have been a bit of a hit and miss for me in the past. I didn't like her paranormal series or Letters to The Lost or Thicker Than Water but absolutely loved A Curse So dark and Lonely! Most definitely her best work to date so really curious about this one to see how much she's improved with her contemporary writing. Thanks for putting it on my radar Linds!

    1. A Curse So Dark and Lonely was one of my favorite reads this year! Absolutely loved it! I haven't read many of her other books, but I do have Letters to the Lost. What aspects of her contemporary books turned you off? I'm curious! Also, book bloggers are the reason my TBR is so massive, haha. <3

  10. Bummer about Runaways, but I had trouble getting into it too. I only read one issue so I didn't give it much of a chance haha, but I was bored. Glad that Firefly's awesome though!!!

    1. I hope for something new every month, but it feels like more of the same. I wanted more character growth, and to maybe see some of them doing things solo. They act like a unit, which is probably why it's so hard for them to grow individually. :(

  11. Sorry to hear about Runaway... I thought about giving it a go but just never felt the real urge to request it from the library. I do want to read Call it What you Want! There are so many Bridget Kemmerer books to read!! ❤️

    1. I'm still missing #3-7, I think, of the Runaways series. I started reading it at #8 and have been slowly acquiring the previous issues (Half Price Books mostly). Yes! I want to read all of Kemmerer's books, and think I'll start Letters to the Lost next. :)

  12. I read volume 1 of the Runaways and I really enjoyed it, but I totally understand falling away from series after being invested for a long time. It is always a bit of a wrestle process to decide whether or not to keep reading or let it go.

    1. This is so true! I'm always willing to try new comics, but it takes a lot to keep me invested and interested in the story. Runaways was great for awhile, but then I stopped feeling it. It's a bummer, but that also makes room for something else. Have you read West Coast Avengers? It's great!

  13. Wow it has been some time since I read Brigid Kemmerer. I loved her Elemental Series with a set of brothers. I never did read the last book of that series. I have not read anything else by her and this sounds good. Hope you get a chance to get it.
