I think that's the direction the story is going in, but I don't want to say too much about it and ruin the surprise. :)

There's a clear M/M relationship that isn't seen as dirty or wrong. Sam sex couples are common and I really enjoyed seeing Mykal and Court together. They have their own reasons for not being intimate, but their feelings are clear. I also liked the bond with them and Franny. It was in no way a love triangle, but three people that cared deeply for one another. Let's see... what else...

There is quite a bit of science involved, though I wish we had been given more details on their classes and what they were learning. It's also a brutal world and they are constantly afraid of being found out. Not only that, but Court's past is haunting him and threatens everything they're working towards. It's a super complicated story with fascinating characters! I think other reviews lowered my expectations instead of raising them, but I shoved all that aside and read for me. The first bit is a little difficult to get through, but I understand the authors needed to set up a lot of the story, and there are a few small things that need to be explained with a lot of detail. The world is entirely new and needs background, their odd link needs to be explained and fleshed out, and we need to know how the three of them got to where they are today. It's a lot, and I think they handled it well, it just felt thick at the start. Once I got about a quarter into the story, things started picking up and it was a lot smoother from there.

I believe Kristen was another person that enjoyed this one... I think I remember seeing her give it 4 stars on Goodreads. If you can overlook some of the holes, I think it would be one you enjoyed! The cliffhanger is a BEAST. I thought their spin on death and humanity was interesting. It shows people looking out for themselves and their best interests, and how that affects everything around them. If someone is going to die young, that doesn't mean they're not going to make valuable contributions to society, but they're not even given the chance. They're told to work hard and live hard until they die. It usually means drugs, sex, and a carefree attitude about health and hygiene. There was a lot of darkness surrounding this story that I wasn't expecting, but the friendship between the three main characters was beautiful. I love how connected they were, and how they handed their unique situation.

I haven't read anything else by the authors, so I had no expectations going in. From reading other reviews... you either love it or hate it. There doesn't seem to be a middle. I enjoyed how unique and creative the story was -- unlike anything else in my opinion. It does take a few chapters to get into, but I think it was worth it in the end. Despite some minor flaws, I felt extremely connected to the characters and their lives.

I think the cover is supposed to represent the purple haze that swallows the sky. No one has ever seen the stars, because the materials they use for warmth (not wood) cause a purple smoke to permeate the air. So I think the cover shows that and then the starts beyond, but I wish they had gone a different route. If I had seen this on a shelf and read the description, I don't think I would buy it. I was asked to review it by someone I trust, and she thought it would be a good fit for me. It was! I haven't seen the cover for book two, but now I'm going to go look. <3

You're absolutely right... no one does Adam Silvera like Adam Silvera. :)Lindsi https://www.blogger.com/profile/13480991226741687503noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-15824987442107017.post-11219673312143873132018-08-27T11:40:56.291-04:002018-08-27T11:40:56.291-04:00It was published this month, so I doubt the next b...It was published this month, so I doubt the next book will be released soon.
