DNF&Y

From the original post (which can be found here):

"It doesn't happen often, but there are times when I just cannot finish a book. As a reviewer, what are you supposed to do? Do you review the part you read? Do you completely remove the book from Goodreads like it never happened? Do you acknowledge it with a label and then forget about it?

I feel bad when I can't finish a book, especially when it's for a blog tour, or an author personally asked me to read and review it. However, I refuse to continue reading something that I'm not enjoying. Life is just too short, my friends.

I want to use this post, DNF&Y, to explain why I gave up on certain books, and what about them just didn't work for me. After talking with Karen from For What It's Worth, I decided to list my reasons for not finishing a book, but also include links to reviews by people that may have had a more positive experience. I feel like that lessens the negativity surrounding this type of post, and allows it to end on a positive note. To quote Karen, "Personally, I find those reviews more helpful. What you don't like might be what I love."

We're all different people. We have different likes and dislikes, and that's why I love books. There is literally something for everyone, and we're not limited to just one person's ideas. We are able to pick and choose books that make us happy, read stories that change our lives, and we get to share our thoughts with the world. Occasionally, those feelings are bad, but I don't think they need to be ignored."

This will be a reoccurring post that I do at the end of every month. Starting February 28th, I will provide a way for other people to link their DNF&Y posts on my blog!

Before now, I never knew what to do with the books I didn't finish. It felt wrong to accept books for review, or even books that I bought myself, and then pretend they didn't exist once I decided they weren't a good fit. It's nice to know I now have an outlet for those books, and from what I've been hearing, it seems like a few of you needed that outlet, too.

With that being said, please do not use this post as an excuse to bash authors or their writing. It's only meant to be a way to express our thoughts and feelings about why certain books didn't work. What was it about the story, the characters, etc.? All of this can be said without being offensive or degrading to the author.

Since we all have different perspectives, I will include a link at the bottom of each review to highlight someone from another blog (or Goodreads) that had a more positive experience with the book.

If you want to use the graphic I've made, please do! I don't mind. If you want to use something else, go for it! Sharing is caring.

If you have any questions, please feel free to email me! Thanks!

    1. Yay! You can link up on the last day of every month, but I also leave the link open for a few weeks in case people are unable to post on that exact date. Sometimes I have posts that overlap, so I'll do mine a day early. It's whatever works for you! I've found that I really like sharing my DNFs and explaining why they didn't work for me. I think it helps to share what we didn't like about a book, because that helps people make more informed decisions. Pretending those books never happened felt like cheating, haha. I'm happy you stopped by! I'm sorry your sign in is being wonky. That happened to me the other day! <3
